About the Author

Kimberly A. Neuendorf holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University, which has one of the country’s top ten doctoral programs in communication. She has taught research methods and media criticism, among other courses, at Cleveland State for over a decade and has published her own research, in which she used content analysis, in numerous journal articles.

Now I fully understand Content Analysis!

Finally, a book comes along that makes the method of Content Analysis clear! The book fully explains the purposes and methods of Content Analysis, and in a simple and friendly manner. When I began reading through this text, I knew very little about Content Analysis, but upon completion of the text, I know that I can analyze any content I desire. This book makes it clear that Content Analysis knows no boundaries. One can analyze anything from films to music, or from literatture to billboards. This book not only can inspire the reader to try his or her own Content Analysis study, but it gives he or she all the tools that needed to bring the analysis to a satisfying conclusion.
And, for those out there, like me, who are intimidated by statistics and the analysis of these numbers, this book explains the statistics in an effective and (thankfully) easy-to-follow manner. For instance, I now actually understand what Scott's Pi is telling me, as well as Cohen's Kappa, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Thank you for finally writing a methods book that does not overwhelm the reader and thank you for the helpful website that accompanies the book, for it is a wonderful online companion to the text.

Conent Analysis Made Simple!!!

As a graduate student, I was searching for just the right methodology to analize an amorphous amount of text. A colleague turned me on to content analysis. I investigated several "expert" texts by Krippendorf et al. and nearly lost my mind sorting through a maze of theory and babble. After an internet search I located Neuendorf's Content Analysis Guidebook. Simply put, this book was an answer to my prayers! Neuendorf writes in a style that is very friendly to the average reader. It is complex enough to stimulate inquiry yet simple enough not to have to read the same chapter ten times! Neuendorf presents readers with a true "guidebook"; a map to not only understanding the history and value of content analysis, but several different paths to acheiving a particular research objective. I see this book as a great tool for undergraduate and graduate students as well as those who have a need or desire to conduct content analysis research. Thank you Kim Neuendorf....GREAT BOOK!!!

Egle Sigler (@eglute, anystacker.com) is currently a Principal Architect at Rackspace. She

started her career as a software developer, and still has a soft spot for all the people that

about a day when writing, testing, and deploying code will be a seamless and easy process,

bug and frustration free for all. Egle believes that knowledge should be shared, and tries to

do so by writing this book, giving talks and workshops at conferences, and blogging.

Yvo van Doorn has more than a decade of system administration experience. The first

part of his career, he manually built out and configured bare-metal servers. At Classmates,

Yvo became a champion of configuration management and virtualization. Before joining

Chef, he learned firsthand the power of VMware’s products when he moved a small Seattle

technology company’s complete production stack over to its virtualization platform. He’s

a strong believer in the culture change that comes with DevOps. When he isn’t busy

spreading the gospel of Chef, he’s probably enjoying a hoppy IPA, exploring the great

outdoors, or celebrating his Dutch heritage while eating a wheel of gouda and watching

Oranje lose the World Cup. Yvo lives with his wife and black lab in Seattle, Washington.

I didn't find this useful, it just gave some info about the various DevOps tools out there (Chef, Puppet, Ansible) and I found this info pretty generic. I was hoping for more information tailored to VMware admins.

About the Author
Markman Ellis was educated at the universities of Auckland and Cambridge, and now teaches 18th-century literature and culture at Queen Mary, University of London. He has published books on the sentimental novel and gothic fiction, and articles on many topics in 18th-century studies, including georgic poetry, slavery, kangaroos and lap-dogs.

A Historical Analysis

The Coffee House by Markman Ellis is a scholarly approach to the history of coffee houses in London, England. It is meant to be a cultural history and is well backed up by lots of research and references.

Markman explores the history of coffee in Britian starting with the first travels of Britons to the coffee houses of Constantinople in the early 1600's. He then traces the beginnings of coffee houses in London. Coffee houses were the meeting places for men where they would discuss news and business. There were all kinds of coffee houses. Some were near brothels, some were patronized by merchants, some by philosophers and some by writers and scholars, as well as the general public.

He traces the history of the coffee houses to the late 1700's when there was a decline in coffee houses, giving way to tea rooms for unchaperoned young women and tea gardens. Some houses served ale, beer, coffee, and tea. He brings us up to modern times wth the advent of espresso and the espresso machine and the 20th century rise of coffee bars. Lastly he talks about the rise of Starbucks and other coffee chains and the return of the coffee house.

I found this book quite scholarly and too descriptive and detailed. It is good for people who want to study the culture, but I would be content with a simpler version and more illustrations. -- Valerie Lull, Author, Ten Healthy Teas

About the Author

H. Scott Fogler is Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research interests include flow and reaction in porous media, fused chemical relations, gellation kinetics, colloidal phenomena, and catalyzed dissolution. Fogler has chaired ASEE's Chemical Engineering Division, served as director of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and earned the Chemical Manufacturers Association's National Catalyst Award.

Steven E. LeBlanc is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Chemical Engineering at The University of Toledo. He previously served as the chair of the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department for ten years. LeBlanc has served as the Chairman of the ASEE Chemical Engineering Education Division and currently is serving as a co-Chair of the ASEE Chemical Engineering Summer School for Faculty to be held in Summer 2007. He also serves on the Publication Board for Chemical Engineering Communications.

Great book

I purchased this text book and it is great book for the class that I am takeing. The book does a great job at breaking down the thought process behind solving problems. Explaining how we miss the solution to a problem by looking at the wrong part of the issue. Many times we over analyze things so much that we cant see the most simple things.

Well organized, and entertaining intro to problem solving

This is a systematic and well organized introduction. I used it with managers and students not just engineers. What was important was not just to follow an algorithmic approach but to imbue a way of thinking. It simply is not true that everyone has formed the discipline to use their mind following these or similar heuristics. We may stumble on them naturally, I agree. But for many people this is a useful revelation. In addition to the book, they have produced software to engage you in learning the problem strategies. Compared to many other books on the subject, this book has enough real world examples and strategies that it is not just pop psychology or wishful thinking or one more brainstrom with web-like diagrams.

This book is absolutely not for engineers.

This review is for the first edition, but too much is wrong for the second edition to correct.

This book talks about taking risks and looking for paradigm shifts and synergizing your lateral-thinking hoobahooba MBA jargon nonsense. Its example of problem solving heuristic is

Define the Problem
Generate Solutions
Decide the Course of Action
Implement the Solution
Evaluate the Solution

Then it gives no concrete guidance on doing any of them. It actually suggests looking for wise employees ("Go talk to George" the cartoon owl) whose experience will include an existing solution. By that logic, it should explain how to hire people to just solve all our problems for us.

It is well organized; like a fourth grader's math book -- complete with pointless cartoon airplanes in the margins. The examples (as many business/marketing as engineering) have zero analysis, but instead jump non-sequitur to conclusions that, of course, support whatever vaporous jargon is on that page. It basically reads like a self-help seminar.

Amid ridiculous single-page introductions to flowcharts and fishbone diagrams, the only technique I found novel was the Duncker Diagram -- and I had to go to Google to get any details. In the end, some version of these tips might be useful to children, but this is not a guide to systematic problem solving. If you want a book on marketing-type creativity, I suggest How to Get Ideas. If you want structured problem solving techniques, I'm still looking for something better than Wikipedia.

A monumental work defining the non-directive technique.

Rogers, the father of humanistic psychology, has created a technique for assisting others to understand and deal with their problems. The non-directive approach relies upon empathy, reflection and clarification to enable the client (patient) to exercise his responsibility for himself. Implicit in the method is the belief that only the client is able to choose a solution for his problems and, with the counselor's (therapist's) help, he will come to a point where he understands the exact nature of his problems enabling him to select solutions consistent with his own values.
Non-directive techniques lend themselves to all interpersonal situations where adjustment of behavior to the demands of the environment will lead to greater satisfaction. It can be of particular value in business when counseling employees who are not performing to standard, experiencing difficulties with co-workers, expressing dissatisfaction with their work, etc.
The book addresses also application of the approach in play therapy, group centered psychotherapy, group-centered leadership and administration, student-centered teaching, and the training of counselors and therapists. Finally, Rogersdevotes a section to discussion of the implications for psychological theory.
Anyone engaged in guiding others should read this book and its predecessor: "Counseling and Psychotherapy".

Great Handbook!

I'm currently doing my externship in Radiography. Now is when I'm putting all of what I learned (back at school) to practical use out in the field.
This pocket handbook has been so helpful during this time - it has all of the important info that I need. All of the positions that I learned from the Bontrager's textbook are here. The book is ruggedly constructed, well organized, yet small enough to slip into a pocket.

Purchasing it was simple with Amazon.com - their price was by far the best and their service outstanding! Even though I chose the "free shipping" option, my package arrived quickly - well before the expected delivery date.

Love, Love, Love this book!

I love this book! A few of us have it in our department and keep it available in select rooms. It's a great quick reference to keep by the xray machine. I use mine at least once a week for exams we don't perform as often, that I need a quick refreshing on (usually for central ray and angle). It has all the standard views and a few not so standard views. It has most of what you would need on a daily basis. There are also areas to write techniques down that worked well for you. Every xray dept should have at least one of these.

Great - Better than Mini-Merrils

My school used Merrils for positioning, but Bontrager gives me more. It shoes blocker and marker placement. It gives an outline of the anatomy and centering points in the beginning of each section. It outlines centering points on the model (iliac crest) that you can't see.

The only thing I wish it would include is evaluation criteria and perhaps a photo of the radiograph, but I guess that would make the book bigger.

All in all, a great studying/learning tool.

Consistently to my delight, I've tried alternative statistical methods in this book that have proven value-added and essential in decision-making, both strategic and tactical.

Excellent Resource for Compensation Statistics

As someone that deals with compensation on a monthly basis, though not an HR compensation professional I have found this to be an excellent resource. This appears to be a college textbook and as such is not out of line for price, also it is targeted to a narrow audience which would also increase the price. But it is expensive, though cheaper than college courses if one is able to self-learn and the knowledge contained in the book is sufficient for what one needs to accomplish.

The statistics are basic for the college level but I think it is valuable to see the methods applied to a specific topic such as this with targeted examples, and valuable to someone that may not have had much exposure to statistics or really grasped the subject very well.

Though I use some of the statistics and aggregations on a monthly basis in creating what I am asked to, there have been some "wow" moments in the book for me. Although I have knowledge of the statistics, when one is in the "grind" we don't always stop and think what else could be done to add value and knowledge. One such bit of knowledge was applying future value to a retention bonus. No one in the organization had thought to see if it was feasable to set aside a sum of money at present value to generate the remainder of the retention bonus via intrest at its due date. While money is in interst bearing vehicles, none is in accounts with this specificity.

Thanks to the authors section on models I am now beginning to frame some up.

The statistical teaching is solid, the methodology seems solid, and as a textbook there are chapter questions and answers.

There is an Excel file of the datasets at the publishers website so one can work the examples in the book, the workbook also includes an index for each dataset listing dataset number, chapter, item (page number, category selection, examples, etc.), and any tables they are used in.

I feel this book is good for a student, a practicing professional that deals with compensation, and good for those just wanting to learn about the subject and even for basic stats (I think the examples tied to a real world problem are valuable for those learning stats in a non-formal environment).

For me it has helped to break out of the methods I inherited (this is the way we do it), apply some things I knew but hadn't thought to apply, and add value for my employer.

Learn about statistics, tables, graphs, and charts as they apply to setting salaries at your company.

An interesting book. It comes across as a college textbook of sorts. And it is hard to love a college textbook. Thus I cannot rate the book higher than a four for starters. I was an accounting major in college, and I had to take Statistics 201 and 202 as a sophomore in order to graduate. As I read this book I recognized just about everything mentioned regarding the statistics discussed. Of course, I earned 6 credits spread over two semesters in statistics, and this book looks like it would be worth no more than 2 college credits if a course were built around it.

I have a little bit of an issue with the outline of the book. It seems to me that chapters 3-10 plus 17 should be grouped together as a Part I, and chapters 11-16 should be grouped together as a Part II. That way the basics of statistics are grouped together and then the applications of statistics to compensation analysis are grouped together. The material covered between pages 319 and 355 probably should be grouped as Appendix A (Miscellaneous Topics), the Glossary should be made Appendix B, and the Answers called Appendix C. Poor organization of a college textbook lowers the rating by yet another star.

This book is all about explaining to the reader the need and the how to of converting raw compensation data into information that can be analyzed and used in decision making processes. You'll need to become expert at summarizing data with tables, graphs, and charts. And you'll need to be able to use statistical formulas on the data often times in order to make meaningful sense of it. This book explains this quite well.

I guess my main question after reading the book is whether a compensation expert should simply take the two classes I took in college and then apply that material to the world of setting compensation levels for companies. Or should they read the instant book where statistics is certainly covered, but the coverage is definitely watered down? The price of the book is in keeping with college textbooks, but it is not too bad. It might be a good idea to get the book as an overview of what to consider when analyzing compensation for a job. And if you want more coverage of statistics, then take the college classes I took. 3 stars!
