Life 101

This book was recommended to me by a friend who's an improv genius, but I was taken with how broad the Improv Wisdom maxims are to everyone's life.

Ms. Madson organizes the book into 13 maxims, each given its own chapter. Samples include: #1: say yes; #2: don't prepare; #3: show up. Sounds simple, right? Although Ms. Madson writes in a tight, easy-to-abosrb style, she also looks you dead in the eye. For example, for people (like me) who just can't remember people's names, she calls it laziness. If you can't remember someone's name, she says you're breaking maxim #3. She doesn't stop there - she gives real improv exercises to build strengths in each maxim. (I tried her approach at the dog park yesterday when I met some new dogs - and their parents - and it worked!)

Improv Wisdom is my favorite new book for how to lead a creative, full life. (Move over, Stephen Covey!) I'm buying copies for everyone I care about and strongly recommend it to anyone who needs a refresher course for how to show up to their own life.

A Book to Read, Re-Read and Give to Others

I've had Patricia Ryan Madson's Improv Wisdom for a few months now. I keep re-reading parts and also buying additional copies for friends. It's enjoyable to read, but more enjoyable to use. My favorite chapter is entitled "Be Average," which sounds terrible (probably VERY terrible to the Stanford students who first experienced Madson's ideas) but it's freed me to write and do other things that waiting for perfection would have blocked. Moreover, the stress-reduction that goes with the principle improves the odds of being much better than average. It's a little book. Take it with you on your next trip.

An Energizing, Inspiring Approach to Your Life

While the reviews for this book mention Patricia Ryan Madson's involvement with improvisational theatre, I was more familiar with her work as a teacher of Constructive Living - a Western adaptation of Japanese psychotherapies by clinician David K. Reynolds. Reynolds' aim is to help his students learn to live a fully present, action-oriented life in a world where problems are just as inevitable as successes and suffering just as much a part of life as joy. "Improv Wisdom" is actually closer in vein to a Constructive Living text than a book geared for improvisational theatre: the focus is not just on theatre, but on making the most of life no matter what one's circumstances. In Madson's words, this is "Saying Yes!" to life. Even just the IDEA that our lives are fully improvised - that we're making it up as we go along - can be a truly life-changing concept for many of us who have been brainwashed into micromanaging and planning every detail of every moment of our careers, family life and even our leisure time.

Reynolds' classic Constructive Living (Kolowalu Books) is still in print. It is a concise, elegant little book that has provided me much help that I highly recommend. Madson's work, however, takes a creative and fascinating departure. Being a clinician, Reynolds' approach was aimed at outgrowing one's emotional obstacles, and while this emphasis certainly appears in "Improv Wisdom" (see in particular, Chapters 5, called "Be Average", and 12, called "Take Care of Each Other"), Madson's incorporation of Keith Johnstone's work on reawakening to spontaneity results in an approach that truly inspires an appreciation for every second of life.

Like Reynolds' book, "Improv Wisdom" is realistic, engaging and extremely energizing to read. As a whole, Madson has a more joyful, exciting tone that is a welcome counterpoint to Reynold's hard-edged pragmatism. The two books complement each other well. Some of the chapters are particularly refreshing: Chapter 1 ("Say Yes") thoroughly has the potential to open one's life up in surprising ways; Chapter 6 ("Pay Attention") wakes one up out of the trance of autopilot and self-absorption; Chapter 10 ("Make Mistakes, Please") is a welcome antidote to the art of not only making mistakes, but learning to use them in creative ways.

There is a lot of important insight in this book that will improve one's relationship with life itself. It would make a wonderful graduation present as well as a great read before a trip. I read it before a yearly camping outing along the Potomac River. It completely subverted my tendency to obsessively plan activities for every minute of the day and allowed me to be present and spontaneous in ways that I hadn't been since I was a child. My friends appreciated the change as well, as I was also more open and present for them than before. Highly recommended on its own, or as a compliment to Reynold's "Constructive Living."

Returning to the U.S. after 20 years in England, Iowa native Bryson decided to reconnect with his mother country by hiking the length of the 2100-mile Appalachian Trail. Awed by merely the camping section of his local sporting goods store, he nevertheless plunges into the wilderness and emerges with a consistently comical account of a neophyte woodsman learning hard lessons about self-reliance. Bryson (The Lost Continent) carries himself in an irresistibly bewildered manner, accepting each new calamity with wonder and hilarity. He reviews the characters of the AT (as the trail is called), from a pack of incompetent Boy Scouts to a perpetually lost geezer named Chicken John. Most amusing is his cranky, crude and inestimable companion, Katz, a reformed substance abuser who once had single-handedly "become, in effect, Iowa's drug culture." The uneasy but always entertaining relationship between Bryson and Katz keeps their walk interesting, even during the flat stretches. YA-Leisurely walks in the Cotswolds during a 20-year sojourn in England hardly prepared Bryson for the rigors of the Appalachian Trail. Nevertheless, he and his friend Katz, both 40-something couch potatoes, set out on a cold March morning to walk the 2000-mile trail from Georgia to Maine. Overweight and out of shape, Katz jettisoned many of his provisions on the first day out. The men were adopted by Mary Ellen, a know-it-all hiker eager to share her opinions about everything. They finally eluded her, encountered some congenial hikers, and after eight days of stumbling up and down mountains in the rain and mud, came to Gatlinburg, TN. Acknowledging they would never make it the whole way, they decided to skip the rest of the Smokies and head for the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia-by car. Late that summer, for their last hike, the pair attempted to hike the Hundred Mile Wilderness in Maine, near the trail's end. They got separated and Bryson spent a day and night searching for his friend. When they finally were reunited, "...we decided to leave the endless trail and stop pretending we were mountain men because we weren't." This often hilarious account of the foibles of two inept adventurers is sprinkled with fascinating details of the history of the AT, its wildlife, and tales of famous and not-so-famous hikers. In his more serious moments, Bryson argues for the protection of this fragile strip of wilderness. YAs who enjoy the outdoors, and especially those familiar with the AT, will find this travelogue both entertaining and insightful.

The Writer Did Not Even Hike The Trail

First of all, the whole premise of this book is false. The writer doesn't even finish the trail. He never even finishes the last segment of the trail. I kept reading and reading waiting for something to actually happen. Maybe a real adventure encountering wildlife or problems with equipment or weather. But, I remained disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Bryson is a very good writer. There is just nothing interesting in this book. He skips major portions of the trail (completing just over 1/3 of the whole thing), but claims on the very last page that he "hiked the Appalachian Trail." That takes some nerve to make a claim like that. Even most of what he actually trekked, he was simply transported there by his wife and picked up in the evenings. Kind of silly if you ask me.

It's worth your time.

Bill Brison’s memoirs of the Appalachion Mountain Trail walk that he of Hanover New Hampshire and a Sam Katz of Des Moines Iowa did in 1996-1997. Brison is a travel writer. He writes well and the book has a warmth that makes you want his book to go on and on. He has terrific humor of a sarcastic nature. He weaves into his narrative facts about the trail, the founders of the trial, how different hikers approach the hike (thru walkers, etc.), the gear, food and water required to walk the trail, the landscape, the mountains, rocks, trees, rivers, streams and lakes, fauna and flora, the dangers (bears, rattlesnakes, insects, poisonous plants, murders), the hardships, and the weather, the camp grounds and sheds, observations about other hikers, the National Parks, the local clubs that maintain the trail, persons and companies that have exploited the trees, animals, fish, and minerals, towns along the trail, roads, etc. He draws stark contrasts between the rustic trail and the concrete asphalt world on either side, and he gets you to see the rustic as preferable. The weakness of the book is Brison, at heart, a loner. I’d read his books, but I would not go out of my way to go on a hike with him (apparently not many of his friends or acquaintances did either, except for Katz and I would hike with Katz).

I found the book A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, a quick and easy read. Bill Bryson, is ambling around his New Hampshire home,when he comes across an entrance to the great Appalachian Trail, the world's longest hiking path. The trail is long-it stretches over 2100 miles from GA to Maine. Naturally, Bryson instantly decides that he wants to hike the whole way! Unfortunately, the only hiking partner he can find, is Stephen Katz, from Iowa,an old friend and long lost recovering alcoholic. Bryson and Katz go way back; they took a trek across Europe together,when they were fresh out of college-and drove each other insane! Having no other choice,however, Bryson meets up with the woefully out-of-shape Katz and hops on a midnight plane to GA. So, Bryson and Katz hit the trail. Although, Bryson enjoys the gruelling hike, Karz is less enthused to sweat it out everyday. After several bone-breaking weeks, they realize that they have barely scratched the surface of the great Appalachian Trail. It will be impossible to hike the entire way.
The plot takes an interesting twist, which I will leave,you,the reader to find out for yourself! Bryson writes in an easy, interesting manner and style and the ending is unexpected as well!

Excellent For The Novice Special Event Manager

I was actually looking for a book about the organising of events with small groups of clients, up to 10 and at most 20 people. This was not what I was looking for....However it instilled a lot of new ideas in my crainium that I was able to carry over into my daily line of work when organising presentations to clients and events with clients.
This book was definately written for the novice special event manager in mind. It deals mainly with the staging of large events such as concerts, olympics, and charity events. They introduce the main stages of special events, problems that can occur, risk involved in taking on a special event, making sure you do your demographics homework to estimate the success of the event, chosing the venue, using television and radio for publicity to increase visitation, making a profit, security before, during after the event, the finale, closing down the event.
Even if you are organising events for a small number of participants, I highly recommend reading this book.

It's not what its cracked up to be.

The book provides you with cursory information and skims over specifics and details. It is not, in my opinion, a complete guide but more of a checklist or overview of special event management. In addition, there is not much to glean from the successful strategies that are showcased, because these too, are not indepth; the book does not really say how they were successful, just that they were successful. It is definitely not for someone doing research on entering this field.

Contains short passages about each facet of event managment. Book is targeted at readers planning large-scale (50,000+ people) events, but much of it is applicable to all types of events. Not a great read, and definitely not the only book to own on event mgmt and marketing, but nontheless it serves as an excellent refrence for specific topics and questions, especially for beginners.

A great resource for parents who want their kids to learn the bible!

I was fortunate to get my hands on an advance copy of this book and what a blessing it has been! It is attractive and engaging to young - middle grade readers from the reluctant to the enthusiastic. I witnessed my 9 year old daughter curled on the couch reading the bible stories for at least an hour- without any prompting. My 11 year old daughter--who enjoys playing Minecraft but is typically resistant to books or anything that I suggest- admitted that she enjoyed reading the bible stories in this format because they were more enjoyable and relatable than other children's bibles she has read. "And by the way" she said "did you know that Oprah's name comes from the Book of Ruth?"
This is the perfect gift and a great resource for parents who want their children to learn the stories and absorb the messages of the Holy Bible. Buy this book, don't say a word, just put it where your kids will see it, and they will read it.

The actual content is lacking

This leaves out tons of details of Bible stories, so it's best read by those who can fill in details during the reading. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. It was initially neat for my son that it looks like Minecraft, but he's just as interested in the stories coming from a regular Bible story book because the stories themselves are pretty fantastic. There are many misspellings, and the story about Ruth and Boaz is CHANGED for this book. Not just glossed over for younger readers, but actually changed. I don't want that in any Bible story book.

Interesting way of conveying Bible stories, but perhaps not the most appropriate.

I grew up owning not one but two children’s Bibles. One of them still gives me nightmares because the pictures were so graphic. The Old Testament has some scary stories for a child, but the pictures made it worse. I recall, specifically, the picture of the flood. These were not cartoon character type pictures. Instead, it was a graphic, realistic scene including a mother in the water desperately holding up a screaming baby trying to reach the ark. Some people might think that showing the horror of a great flood that wipes out almost everyone drives the point home. Cool. I can probably find that book somewhere if you are interested. Maybe, however, a book more kid appropriate might drive more interest. When I saw this book, I thought, “Now that’s a neat idea, I’m going to see how things have changed in the Bible delivery to kids market over the years.”

Admittedly, my religious views are complex. Something about the story of creation told brick by brick just seemed too good to pass up. Minecraft is in. I worked at the book fair at my daughter’s school, and kids were buying Minecraft books left and right. Although I do not really get the fanaticism about the game, I love that it leads kids to read. I imagine that a parent wanting to share Bible stories to their kids would appreciate that this book will encourage them to read on their own.

This storybook (I am not going to use the word Bible because it is really just a series of major stories from the Bible rather than a Bible itself), begins with creation and ends with the day of Pentecost with plenty of stories in between. Each story is laid out sort of like a graphic novel with a Minecraft picture of the scene and brief text below it. Dialogue is handled through quote boxes. For example, on one page there is a little square-headed Noah peaking out of the top of the ark with what appears to be a beaked television next to him. I think it’s a dove, though. The text is four lines long, and Noah says, “I hope we’ll see land soon.” The text and dialogue are kept simple, as a book for children probably should.

Some of the pictures are better than others. A few have minimal detail, and some are (inadvertently) humorous. The little pixelated grape leaves on Adam and Eve cracked me up. The Minecraft block crucifixion scenes seem to really, really downplay how that went down (see picture). The authors obviously had to consider both the appropriateness of what they displayed for kids and the limitations of pixelated blocks. Still, it seems to be a bit too cartoonish for the magnitude of the event. Of course, there is a happy ending.

Notably, this book is full of stories with little context. Considering how much debate there is over which version, translation, or interpretation of the Bible is correct, there is no way any kid’s book can capture every story without some potential misinterpretation. I was interested in a few stories, though. For example, I looked at the story of Sodom and Gomorrah because that one seems to be popular in modern times. The version is a bit lighter than in the actual Bible.

That story starts out like this (these are direct quotes):

“Er, God.”
“Yes, Gabriel”
“I think we have a problem.”

Then we go to the city and are told “Sodom had become a bad city and it’s people were full of wickedness.” The corresponding picture is of a bunch of block-heads saying, “I hate you,” and I think maybe one hit another one. If I was a kid reading this book, assuming I knew nothing else of the story, I’d think, “Wait, the whole city was destroyed because a few people are mean to each other.” Then I’d go into the living room to ask my parents about it, they’d be watching the Republican presidential debate, and I would start crying expecting to see that entire stage catch flames. I suppose it gets the story across, but there is probably some middle ground between this and my old children’s Bible that was drawn by the art director from the Saw movies.

Still, this should supplement any religious teachings rather than replace it. It is easy to read and relatable for kids who are into Minecraft. If Jesus were born in the past decade, I think he would like Minecraft. After all, he was raised by a carpenter.
