Horror Classic on Page and Big Screen

I will admit I chose to read this short story for a couple of different reading challenges I am taking part in. One challenge for January is to read a book that was made into a movie. I have actually chosen Ms. du Maurier's Rebecca, but in case I don't get a chance to finish it this month, I wanted to be sure and have the category covered, and remembered that a book of hers had spawned the classic Hitchcock movie, The Birds. (Relatively obscure fact, Rebecca was Hithcock's first movie in America. He also brought du Maurier's Jamaica Inn to the big screen.)

I remember the movie as one of the first horror movies I ever watched as a child, and will admit that it still gives me shivers to this day. Hitchcock had done such a fantastic job with Rebecca, and closely followed the storyline, so I was expecting the same with The Birds. I was a bit disappointed to realize that there were vast differences in this one, and to realize what short story it was based on.

But then I made the conscious effort to put my preconceived notions behind, and focus on the story itself. Though not the same as the movie, it is still a brilliantly frightful concept - a massive attack of birds on humans with little to know rhyme of reason. The story is told from the viewpoint of Nat, a simple farmhand with a wife and two children of his own, living on a peninsula near the raging sea in rural England, with a scant population in the area. This was in a time before television, or at least this family did not have one, only a radio to keep them entertained and informed.

While the main plot line is the horror of nature turning on humanity, en masse....think about it for just a few moments and you can see the horror potential. Told with the beautifully prosaic voice du Maurier excels at, it would be enough at just that. But the underlying storylines of preparedness, respectful fear of the uncontrollable nature of, well, nature, and having the sense to not think that simple because you are human you can change its course or beat it back into submission through your show of force.

Though scant in pages and word count, it is a near perfect horror story leaving you with so many unanswered questions of what comes next. To me, this is key to giving five stars to any thriller or tale of horror. Sometimes the unknown is the most terrifying thing of all, is it not?

Enthralling story with continual tension, excellent writing!

I remember pulling Daphne du Maurier's The Birds off my mother's bookshelf when I was only about 9-years-of-age. It was the first book that I read outside of school. I can remember the excitement of this short, easy-to-read little book. It conveyed, suspense, honor, and love. Maurier helped me to appreciate good writing and books in general. A few years later I saw the movie on TV, and although differing from the book in many respects, I like Hitchcock's movie as well. I can highly recommend this book.

Six First Rate Stories by Daphne Du Maurier (1907 - 1989)

Cautioned by the three reviews already on amazon.com on 06/12/2013 (each about "The Birds" and about none of the other stories in this 1952 collection of six stories by Daphne Du Maurier), I want to make it clear that I am writing about the Arrow pocket book edition of 1952. Not about an audio tape or just about the "novelette," "The Birds."

THE BIRDS AND OTHER STORIES is one of the best five or six collections of shorter literary works that I have read and I am nearly 78. There is something in the six stories for some reader somewhere: mystery, terror, religion, narrators without names and in "The Old Man" perhaps the most unexpected but fair surprise ending in English literature.

Here are sketches of the six yarns:

(1) Best known if not for itself then for its 1963 film adaptation by Alfred Hitchcock is "The Birds." Mysterious, increasingly well coordinated attacks in early December by normally peaceable birds like seagulls on humans begins on the coast of Cornwall in England. These murderous attacks are seen in the narrative entirely from the perspective of one besieged rural English family. From the wireless they soon learn that the same attacks are occurring across the British Isles. The family hears the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force attack the invaders, then retreat. In a few days the wireless fall silent. The family cannot pick up any Continental radio broadcasts. It settles down to outlast the besieging birds.

(2) The most memorable story of the six stories is surely "Monte Verita" (The Mountain of Truth). It brilliantly suggests the coming (1957) Du Maurier novel THE SCAPEGOAT.

Friends since boyhood and university years at Cambridge, Victor and the unnamed narrator of this tale both become avid amateur mountain climbers. Victor marries Welsh beauty Anna, and the narrator is best man. The latter promptly falls in love with Anna for life, as he recounts for us readers decades of events when nearly 70 years old.

Both men are swept into eerie, terrifying religious mystery. Victor takes austere, spare-living Anna on her first mountain climb somewhere in Southern Europe. Anna without notifying her husband deliberately climbs Monte Verita alone and enters an ancient, never visited almost inaccessible mountain monastery. By 1938 when, almost by accident, the narrator discovers a dying Victor and carries a final message up the peak to Anna, she has become the community's abbess. She is also the hooded high priestess of men and women who worship the moon and the sun, who believe that Monte Verita is paradise where they will never grow old -- and more. Lowlanders hate the ancient monastery and are bent on destroying it. The ancient connection between mountains and worship is explored. Over the decades Victor made an annual trek to the barred, silent fortress monastery and exchanged notes with Anna, whom he was not permitted to see. He used the time to trace the history of worship of sun and moon, its universal connection with mountains and perhaps to European Druidism.

(3) In "The Apple Tree" a deservedly underappreciated wife dies and returns to life three months later as a hitherto barren apple tree in her former garden, apparently to torment the husband who ceased loving her years before. He can chop down the apple tree and try but fail to burn its wood. But the hewn stump that remains has the potential to become a deadly trap.

(4) In "The Little Photographer" somewhere on the Mediterranean coast, a beautiful, self-fancying marquise is on vacation with children and nanny but without her busy husband. Vastly bored, she opts for "passion between strangers" (p. 163) and seduces Monsieur Paul, a simple, crippled native photographer who is the sole support of his sister. Madame la Marquise regards the mousy man as a mere pastime to be discarded at any time. But he falls madly in love with the gorgeous older woman and vows to follow her to the City and be her slave. No way! She pushes annoying M. Paul off a cliff to his death, But before that during her naps on the cliff, M. Paul had taken photographs of the marquise. When the dead man's sister discovers the photos, blackmail begins.

(5) In "Kiss Me Again, Stranger," a recently demobilized soldier in London, now a garage mechanic, falls madly in love with a woman who might well be a vampire. In any event he forces himself on her attention and woos her in a graveyard. Had the British soldier ever once been any form of airman, she would have torn out his throat. Why? Because unnamed German aviators had destroyed her flat and her parents in a bombing raid. She therefore murdered three British airman in or near cemeteries over just three weeks.

(6) The collection ends with by far the shortest tale (11 pages), "The Old Man." In one of the author's famed surprise endings the old man in question, after struggling for food and interacting with his mate and growing children, leaves the neighborhood where he has been staying for some years. The unnamed narrator says "... suddenly I saw the old man stretch his neck and beat his wings, and he took off from the water, full of power, and she followed him. I watched the two swans fly out to sea right into the face of the setting sun ... alone, in winter." Up to that passage I had no reason to doubt that the old man was thoroughly human. Yet a re-reading shows that Du Maurier has been more than fair in her clues that what sounds like people are really swans, not "The Birds," but nonetheless birds.

Bottom line: Daphne Du Maurier, most known for her 1938 gothic novel REBECCA, singlehandedly in the 20th Century returned to literary eminence virtually expired English gothic writing for the first time since the days of Mary Shelley, Sir Walter Scott and Edgar Allan Poe. The skills shown in REBECCA 14 years earlier burn as brightly in this 1952 collection THE BIRDS AND OTHER STORIES. A truly grand read.

Best book for 20th century European History

I read this book for my IB European History course during high school. I found CE to be a lot better when it comes to the 20th century than the more often read A History of the Modern World by R.R. Palmer. CE is a fantastic resource and is not really that boring to read for someone who is interested in history. If you are not interested in history then don't touch it unless you have to, you will most likely hate it. Overall I thought it was good even for last minute review before a test. If you are doing 20th century history and specifically history of Russia/Soviet Union then this is the book because it focuses a lot on the Cold War and Soviet interactions with the world.

"The primacy of Europe..."

...is how H. Stuart Hughes commences his wonderfully erudite study of half a century of European history. He continues the subject sentence: "...was taken for granted at the beginning of the twentieth century. Nearly all Europeans - and most non-Europeans as well- assumed that this little continent would continue to play the leading role in world affairs, as it had during the four centuries past." But in that half century, that assumption would radically change.

I first read Hughes account when I was at university in the `60's. Realistically, I had learned so very little history (and therefore was bound to repeat it?), and most of that American, that Hughes literally opened the door to a completely different world, one that I was totally unfamiliar with. So many names, so many "complex interacting historical forces" that I could not possibly have imagined. I was most impressed, and therefore within five years of my first read, started visiting all those strange place names for the first time. I also tucked away a vow that this history required a reread.

After another half century, I have accomplished it. I remain dazzled by the sheer mastery of the material that Hughes has. There are no "little guys" in this account. It is the "Big Men" (and yes, they were almost all men, as well as being white), along with those abstract historical forces which are so often rooted in economics and ethnic affinity. Again and again, I found Hughes providing carefully weighted and balanced assessments of the conflicting forces, and that these assessments have withstood the test of time.

He commences his account on the eve of World War I; a period others have called The Proud Tower: A Portrait of the World Before the War, 1890-1914. Overall, the world was optimistic, with rising living standards and continuing positive breakthroughs on the scientific front, with wonderful practical applications. Then those interlocking and conflicting "abstract" forces, controlled, and not, at the same time, by a few men, unleashed the disaster that would be World War I. On the re-read, I know where the Somme and Verdun are, since I have been there. And his assessment resonated so well: it was there that "The Proud Tower" died, since so many of the European upper class were killed there (and how unlike more recent wars, that are carefully eschewed by the ruling class). And speaking of which, another of Hugh's assessment concerning the role of Mussolini, in his shift from the political left to right: "Italian corporatism stood revealed as little more than an elaborate engine of class rule."

Hughes account is far more than politics and war (though, given the period covered, much of both is discussed). There are chapters devoted to cultural developments, in art, literature, architecture, etc. And in Hughes' style, they are succinct, crisp summaries. There are chapters devoted to the rise of both communism and fascism. Also, naturally, there is much on economics and the Great Depression. The final portions of the book deal with World War II, and the immediate aftermath. He ends his account in 1960.

I found myself in the role of the "Greek chorus," that is, knowing how the drama would turn out. For example, in reading about Robert Schuman, and how he was instrumental in creating the European Coal and Steel Community that would ultimately lead to the Euros I have held in my hand. The war in Algeria was not concluded upon publication, and now I have a much better personal awareness of its denouement. Likewise, the length of time to the denouement not only of Portugal's colonies, but communism itself.

As a final note, I found a list of 60 or so great books that was given to me by that college professor in my junior year. I've managed to read about half of them so far... and if I really hurry, who knows if I can break three-quarters? As for Hughes truly brilliant history, 6-stars.

light on eastern europe

I enjoyed the text overall. It is rather light on its treatment of eastern europe, however. The writing on the area is too often limited to the soviets, not the home native nationalities. It also leaves much to be desired in its review of the 70's and 80's. otherwise a good read covering all aspects of modern european history.
