low quality pictures

The material is well structured and the book is written in a clear and concise manner that's why I give five stars to the author. But I am really disappointed because I do believe that is unacceptable nowadays to allow for printing a book with such a poor quality of sketches/pictures. I think that most of them are scanned from previous material, and unfortunately it turned out that the scanning equipment was too sophisticated for author's assistants. So, I rate the publisher with just one star! - Please note that my comment refers to the fifth edition.

Quality Material, with Dust & Bumps

(Re: 5th Edition) The principles of dynamics are timeless. In this regard, the book is excellent. Each chapter tackles a specific topic, develops it, and stays on topic. Dynamics can be difficult to process for a student.

There are many issues in this edition which can be improved with a revision.
1. Chapter 24 discusses the UBC 97. That building code was replaced with IBC 2003... which was replaced with IBC 2006... then 2009... then IBC 2012. Four code changes behind is unforgivable in engineering. The methods of the UBC differ greatly from the IBC. This is a compound problem. However, chapter 25 covers the IBC 2000, so there's that.
2. The book introduces the student to SAP2000. Honestly, I never heard of this analysis software before this book. More well known are RISA and RAM Advanse.
3. Some problems have incorrect answers. Some equations have small errors. Some graphics look like copies of copies of copies. The variables are illegible due to the ink bleeding the letters into Rorschach blots. The binding on my edition was so dry, it broke after a week.

In short: The material and content are better than adequate. But, a revision is needed.

This book is terrible

This book will take manic, uncontrollable dumps all over your dreams of learning structural dynamics. There very well may be a mistake on every single page. I've yet to test this out, because I couldn't make it past chapter 8 without losing my vision trying to see their figures that look like someone took a picture on a 2003 camera phone, imported it to ms paint, reduced the resolution by half, printed it out, scanned it back onto a computer, then print it out again at whatever place was dumb enough to decide to publish this book.

There has to be something better.

I used this book for a fluid mech course and I thought this book is terrible. The derivations of the equations are thorough but that doesn't make up for what this book lacks. The problems are quite difficult since the material covered in the chapters doesn't match what the questions ask. I don't expect a textbook to entertain me but this one put me to sleep a lot. There are (literally) hundreds of references to video clips demonstrating different topics covered but they weren't put on the included CD. And speaking of the CD, it is completely worthless. Don't even bother wasting your time looking at it since it contains very little useful information. There are a few more detailed explanations of a few of the topics in a few chapters but that is it. There is no real meat there. I gave this book 2 stars only because I did like the thoroughness of the derivations other than that this book is a waste of your time and money. And if one opinion may not count out of a class of 35 about half of us hated the book (it was doubtful the other half had even read it). If you have to use this book, good luck.

An above average text book.

I feel that this book is indeed a nice looking book, and also has fairly good content. It is true that a student should have a fairly good grasp of The Calculus and Differential Equations, but most students will already have such knowledge by the time they take this class. I feel it is a positive that the authors did not feel obliged to explain the small mathematical details necessary for each example since to do that would have weighed the book down with unnecessary redundant information. The authors realized that if a student needs to find out the mathematics necessary for an equation, they can reference back to their other textbooks as necessary. I will keep this book on the shelf in my office after I graduate.

An "A" student's perspective

I am a student at the University of California with a 4.0 GPA. As a major in Mechanical Engineering, I am obligated to take at least one course in Fluid Mechanics. From my perspective this book is a worthless tool. The derivations are hard to follow, and the problems do not reflect the material covered in the text, making them quite difficult to solve. Realizing that this is a difficult subject to master, by use of this book it becomes even harder. Just about the best feature of this book is the "neat" picture on the cover.
IF YOU ARE AN INSTRUCTOR, PLEASE, FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR STUDENTS, DO NOT USE THIS TEXT.
It's one thing for an experienced person in the discipline of Fluid Mechanics to follow this text, but from a first time student's seat, this book is among the WORST books I've ever had to use.
Please take my warning seriously.
EDIT (2003): I still maintain that this was one of the worst books in my entire college career. All the above reviews that criticized ME as opposed to my review or the text (i.e. "4.0 boy", "poor foundation in math" [right, those make sense together]) have background in the subject, whereas this text is meant for a first course. In retrospect, I can use it as a refrence, but at the time it was supposed to teach me, it was complete garbage. Right now I have 8 "helpful" reviews, and if those 8 were prof's or instructors, then that's about 480 students that are better off. I even got an email from one that said he wouldn't use the text, and asked if I had seen a better one. I suspect a couple of the "not helpful" reviews are from my fans above, who may or may not be affiliated with the author or publisher.

An excellent playbook on digital transformation

This book is a must read for anyone who is looking for a good book on digital transformation.
The book is packed with good practical examples from well-known digital native and traditional companies including tools, suggestions and interesting information about digital transformation.With his professional background in Business Strategy and Digital Marketing, the author profoundly provides a unique view on Digital Strategy.
This book consists of seven chapters with conclusion in the end. Self- assessment is also provided to conduct an audit of the business’s readiness for digital transformation.
The first chapter begins with the five domains of digital transformation which cover customers, competition, data, innovation and value. The author explains how digital forces are reshaping such domains. In this chapter, key concepts and strategic themes of digital transformation are defined. I believe that these five domains are essential factors that need to be seriously considered by all companies under the digital environment. Even though organizational challenges have been mentioned in this book, my personal view is that this topic should be considered as a domain in digital transformation as well.
Chapter two focuses on customer domain. The author points out that the relationship of customers to businesses is changing therefore business people have to rethink about their customers. The author explains how and why such relationship to customers is changing in every industry. The author also points out that we are no longer in Mass market business model but we are in the midst of a profound shift toward “Customer network model”. With the emerging of digital platform businesses, I believe that everyone can see this shifting.
Chapter three provides detailed information on competition. The main point of this chapter is “Build platforms, not just products”. With great examples from platform businesses like Airbnb and other similar platform businesses companies we can clearly see that competition is happening more across industries than being happened within the same industries. We can see the role of asymmetric competitors in this chapter. Detailed information on platforms can be found in this chapter. However, further reading is required if you want to know more about platform businesses.
Chapter four focuses on data domain. As we all know companies all over the world have long been using data as a tool for their businesses. They also know that data is a valuable asset. However turning data into asset is less likely to happen in the real world for pre-Internet companies. Thank to this book, the author includes the data as a domain for digital transformation. The author depicts the changes in strategic assumptions from the analog to the digital age in term of data usage. Focusing on data as an asset is the main point of this chapter. The data strategy and impact of big data are explained with great examples. The data value generator proposed in this chapter is an important tool for generating new strategic ideas for using the data. However, further reading is still required to explore the meaning of data in other perspectives.
Innovation has been an important part of every business and playing more important role in digital businesses. Chapter five gives the details on innovation domain. Apparent examples shown in this chapter are good information on how companies learn to innovate and improve their products, services and processes. A success story of a company provides in this chapter is a good source of ideas for innovation. Innovate by rapid experimentation is the main point of this chapter. Seven principles of experimentation are provided as a guideline to create the most for company innovation efforts. Based on those principles two types of experimental methods given in this chapter are very helpful for such experiments. We can also learn how to scaling up an innovation by using four paths describe in this chapter.
Chapter six is about value domain. Adapt your value proposition is the main point of this chapter. Music business is used as an example to describe the value proposition of players in this business. In addition to value change in strategic assumption the author also proposes the routes for businesses to move upward a declining market. In order for any organization to access and adapt its value proposition for its customers, the Value Proposition Roadmap is a helpful tool for this purpose. Under this roadmap, detailed information is provided by using hypothetical university as a good example.
Final chapter is about Mastering Disruptive Business Model. In this chapter the author develops a clear understanding of disruption in a sphere of business by offering a comprehensive definition of business disruption. It can be clearly seen from the definition that innovations are not the same as disruption. The author also proposes a Business Model Theory of Disruption as a predictor of business disruption. There are two types of tools being used under the topic of Mastering Disruptive Business Model. With the help of these tools the companies will be able to assess whether or not new challenger poses a disruptive threat to an incumbent industry and will also be able to map out how a disruptive challenge will likely play out and identify companies best option for response. The strategies to become the disrupter and the strategies to mitigate losses from the disruptor are provided with examples.
In conclusion, the author emphasize that digital transformation is not about technology but about strategy. Organizational agility is a key reason for businesses that are unable to successfully keep up with fast-paced evolution of digital age. Therefore three general areas in developing organizational agility are proposed in this chapter .In addition, the author also provides Self-assessment tool to conduct companies’ readiness for digital transformation.
I completely agree with the author that, in many cases, management simply doesn’t have a playbook to follow to understand and then address the competitive challenges of digitization. If you are looking for such playbook I recommend this book to you.

Overall strong, but no glossary

There are a lot of things I really like about this book - it's structured clearly, the tone is conversational and current, and the author lays out a clear path for students to be successful on the exam. My one frustration is that there is no glossary of terms. There is quite a bit of vocabulary associated with some of the papers; the author bolds the terms, but we are left to glean the definitions from context or outside research. Overall, though, this is a solid text that is helpful to me and my students. It would also be useful to someone studying independently.

Not THAT "Girl on the Train" OMG I read the wrong book.

I have been hearing so many great things about The Girl on the Train, so I read it. Or thought I did. THIS is not that book! That book is by Paula Hawkins.

It's funny, there are several similarities between the two books, and this one was written first I think. This book is not so great, however. Mystery fans might like it. But by the time I finished I was thinking "man how did this book get such hype"? It is a standard murder mystery that in my opinion is not very well written. It has incredibly unbelievable coincidences and poor character development. It left me thinking I could write a better book than this. Then I went online to complain and I realized I had bought the wrong book, LOL!

Don't make the mistake I did -- this is Girl on *A* Train, not THE Girl on THE Train.

Good writing

The description of this book drew me in. The writing was good. The mystery was interesting. The broken up chapters filled in back story. I think maybe it might have flowed a little better if the backstory was woven in instead of separated in a chunk in the middle. I say this because I didn't feel like I knew who Elly was until I got to the middle piece. Sympathy and interest in her earlier might have helped to pull the story along.
I wasn't entirely convinced of the ending. Interesting twist though. All in all a good read. I would read more by this author.

Wrong Train

Did not expect this book. My sister described another plot and I kept waiting for what I thought would happen. I finally realized that I was on a different train. Then I relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the trip which contained amazing twists and turns, all the way to the end. It wasn't the book club special, but should be.
