About the Author
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70 and subsequently in airborne infantry, long-range patrol and intelligence assignments until retiring after 26 years. He was a special operations forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center for 12 years and is now a freelance writer, living in Texas.

This review is for two volumes of the Osprey Publishing Elite series. The books are "World War II Allied Sabotage Devices and Booby Traps" and "World War II Axis Booby Traps and Sabotage Tactics" by Gordon Rottman.

These books cover a subject often neglected or overlooked in military history; and if covered is played down in its effectiveness, due to the "ungentlemanly" conduct of these tactics. There have been very few pictorial accounts on the subject and these Osprey titles add to the material currently available. Both of the books are not an definitive study, however they do vividly cover the salient points of these "guerrilla" tactics.

The books cover Allied and Axis booby trap devices designed to harm or surprise a person, unknowingly triggered by the presence or actions of the victim. As the word "trap" implies, they often have some form of bait designed to lure the victim towards it. However, in other cases the device is placed on busy roads or is triggered when the victim performs some type of everyday action e.g. opening a door, picking something up or switching something on. Lethal booby traps are often used in warfare, particularly guerrilla warfare and partisan operations. The Effects of booby traps in addition to the obvious ability of booby traps to kill or injure, their presence has other effects. These include psychological effects, slow down operations, create no-go zones, expand logistical and manpower to counter such threats and create confusion. Additionally, booby traps are indiscriminate weapons; like anti-personnel mines they can harm civilians and other non-combatants (during and after the conflict) who are unaware of their presence.

Sabotage operations and training for the Axis and Allies of World War II consisted of teaching would-be saboteurs the key components to working machinery on which to focus their destruction. Saboteurs were highly trained in explosives and targeted military physical infrastructure during partisan operation, like railroads, fuel points and arms manufacturing plants.
Overall, a lot of the referenced material can be found in obsolete military manuals and on-line, however these books have packaged the information in a nicely packaged and easy to understand format. In my opinion I found the books to be a very good introduction to the subject.

Within the limits of the the Osprey Range Gordon's books are well written, interesting, factual, backed by thorough research and incorporates information often left out of other books on WWII by Osprey. Usually includes technical details, tactics, organizations and examples of use.

This book explores the use of Axis Booby traps - hidden traps left in the area just abandoned by Axis units (mostly German, the Japanese didn't use them much in comparison) to slow down and disrupt pursuing Allied units. A dirty business still being used in the world - improvised explosive devices. In the case of the German Heer (Army) not so improvised.

There is a companion volume on Allied booby traps as well.

About the Author
Patrick Ness is the author of the critically acclaimed and best-selling Chaos Walking trilogy. He has won numerous awards, including the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, the Booktrust Teenage Prize, and the Costa Children's Book Award. Born in Virginia, he lives in London.

Siobhan Dowd spent twenty years as a human rights campaigner for PEN and Amnesty International before her first novel, A SWIFT PURE CRY, was published in 2006. She won the Carnegie Medal posthumously in 2009 after her death at the age of forty-seven.

Jim Kay studied illustration and worked in the archives of the Tate Gallery and the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, two experiences that heavily influence his work. His images for A MONSTER CALLS use everything from beetles to breadboards to create interesting marks and textures. Jim Kay lives in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Subtle Masterpiece

"A Monster Calls" by Patrick Ness runs along the veins of dark fairytales. In it, Conor O'Malley, whose mother battles with cancer, struggles with the universes of nightmare versus reality. Are they bleeding together? Are nightmares more real than he wants to admit? More importantly, who is this monster that claims Conor was the one who called for his help?

The monster who says he is a spirit as old as Earth itself transforms from the yew tree across the road into a ghastly presence (more so if you read the illustrated edition, whose art was masterfully crafted by Jim Kay), but Conor does not fear him. He say he is not as terrible as the monster in his nightmares as plain as we say our dish needs more salt.

The yew monster visits him at 12:07, afternoon or midnight, depending on when Conor needs him. He shares three stories, which seem like conventional children tales focused on teaching morals, but the yew monster proves to Conor as much as to us that the world is not as black and white as we were taught.

The thing I enjoyed most about this little book was the fearlessness Mr. Ness had concerning reality through those three stories and Conor's fourth. The vain can be good contributors to society, princes can take drastic measures to further a belief that isn't true, bullies can be cruel without throwing punches. And you could also be selfish when you shouldn't be, tired when you should be holding on, and that too is alright.

It is that fearlessness that encouraged me to give this book no less than four stars. In conjunction with stunning art and crisp, clear formatting, this little book becomes more than just a story...it is a reflection of reality that genre (and bestselling YA) books need again. It has an undeniable beating heart between the lines that first were penned by Siobhan Dowd. It is a story that moves all the chords of your soul, and dives into all the numb corners of your mind. Even if it does not coax tears, it is sure to pluck and scar a heartstring forever.

"Sometimes you read a book that you didn't know you needed to read" is a common thread placed in reviews for this novel. If anything, that is an understatement. "A Monster Calls" is a book that will rightfully become a children's literary masterpiece. It is a timeless tale for the hearts of children and adults; it will be there to help us all learn it's okay to let go.

A Monster Calls Me

This book is pretty incredible in my eyes. It took me longer then it probably did the average person reading this book. I dedicate my lunch breaks at work to reading. There were times I was reading it and had to put it down. Not because I didn't like it but because I have been in Conor's shoes and the book really struct every cord imaginable in me. I lost my Mom to cancer when I was 10 years old and this book used a creative, fantasy like way of interpreting the emotions a child goes through during that experience. As a fan of fantasy, fairy tales and monsters I could appreciate the unique spin the author used to tell the tale. An overall beautiful piece of literature that reminded me even 25 years after the loss of my mother that it's ok to let go.

Chilling, raw, and phenomenal!

One thing that is irrevocably human, regardless of age, is how we face the truth. A lot of times it's not as pretty as we like to think because the truth often equates to reality. Connor's nights are plagued by nightmares. His mind is clawing at his reality to tell him something. Something important. At a critical time in his life, as his mother suffers her ongoing illness, his nightmares come to life as the Monster. Or are they really nightmares? Is the Monster really their embodiment? The Monster is old magic of the earth. Older than any religion or belief. Connor's pain and rage has unwittingly called to him in his time of crisis, but is he here to help Connor, or destroy him?

This is one of those books that hits you inside. The story is about a young boy facing a reality he's afraid of. He represents everything it means to be a kid facing this situation and human in general. This is highly relateable story of inner demons and the contradiction of humanity. Patrick Ness has written a very true representation of the darkness in humans when faced with an unwilling truth. With fear. This is classified a teen and/or middle grade book, but it reads much deeper than that. As childlike as some aspects are, this story transcends age to reach the core of human emotions and relationships.

I had to binge read this. I started it and could not put it down. It is crafted brutally, beautifully, and as raw as any book can get. I cannot recommend this enough to everyone. It has quickly become a favorite of mine and one I plan to read more than once.

Fine content; poor Kindle formatting

The content of these cards is very good. The formatting of the Kindle edition is terrible. It needs to be formatted so that you're looking sequentially at the "front" of one card and then the "back" of the next card on the next Kindle page/screen. As it's formatted now, there's no separation between flashcards, so the "back" of the previous card often shows up on the same screen view as the "front" of the next card. This is very confusing for studying. The Lange Histology flash cards are formatted perfectly; these dermatology flash cards should be formatted exactly the same.

Review of the 'Kabbalah'

I read the 'Kabbalah' for the 1st time in the early '90's. I can still open it up, to this day, and learn something brand new.
Gershom Scholem was a professor of Jewish mysticism at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem until his death in 1982. Among his works are 'Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism', 'The Messianic Idea in Judaism', 'Origins of the Kabbalah', 'Kabbalah', 'On the Kabbalah and Its Symbolism', 'On the Mystical Shape of the Godhead', and 'Sabbatai Sevi: The Mystical Messiah'. Every book is a treasure in and of itself. Mr. Scholem put the Kabbalah back on the 20th century map. His studies on the 'Sefer Yetzirah (Book of Creation)', 'The Bahir (Bright)', and 'The Zohar (Splendor)' show the brillance of this unique individual.
The 'Kabbalah' is written in 3 parts. The 1st is the Kabbalah itself; from the beginings of mysticism up to modern times (including the disaster brought on by Sabbatai Sevi, that very nearly destroyed Judaism for 250 years afterwards). He also shows the Hasid's (the Ultra-Orthadox Jews) and how the Kabbalah and the Zohar influance their teachings and beliefs. He also shows why regular Orthadox Jews avoid the Kabbalah (calling it Jewish withcraft) and why they considear the Hasid's to be cultists of a sort (even though the Kabbalah WAS Orthadox Judaism for 300 years before the advent of Sabbatai Sevi - which Mr. Scholem painfully points out). He also shows the inept handling by the 'Christian Kabbalists' and occultists in general - neither group prepared to do the initial research that was needed. Both groups had different agendas and used the Kabbalah to further those particular goals.
The 2nd part is chocked full of enough goodies to make you swear off dieting for good. The Zohar, the Shabbatean movement, the Frankists, demonology, gemaria (bible codes that change what the Torah says to something else entirly [the book 'The Bible Code' is an excellent example] to eventualy write a '6th Book of Moses' written entirly out of codes is the Kabbalists eventual goal), how to make a Golem, Thrown (merkabah) mysticism, and much much more.
Lastly, it has the peaple and their histories that make this book such a delight to read. Azriel of Gerona, Moses Cordovero, Joseph Gikatilla, and many more. The 'Lion' and his 'Cubs' give their roar as well.
If you have to buy one book on the Kabbalah, then this is the book to get. You will not be sorry in the least.

Fantastic and Exhaustive Survey Of Kabbalistic Literature & History

Scholem originally intended much of the material in this book to be entries in an encyclopedia and anyone approaching this book without that knowledge may find it's organization confusing. However his detailed & scholarly (dare I say intellectual) analysis of Kabbalah's fascinating history and colorful characters is unparalleled. He digs deep into the similarities and contradictions between the different Kabbalistic traditions & teachers, citing an exhaustive list of references in the process. The research into this material is quite deep and I have yet to see another work which comes as close to an indepth analysis of Kabbalistic history & literature as this one does.
Having said that, this book is NOT for the layperson. And by layperson I mean anyone not familiar with Judaism and the basic religious/spiritual Hebrew vocabulary. Despite the fact that this wasn't originally intended as a "book" per se, the writing is awkward at times even within the major chapters as he jumps from concept to concept with little transition. In order to really get an idea as to the full exposition of any one topic it is necessary to go to the index and refer back page by page as he does not organize material concisely or summarize anything.
All in all, this is a MUST for anyone seriously interested in Kabbalah--I do pronounce that this book has probably and might continue to separate the wheat from the chaff as far as serious students of Hebrew mysticism & dabblers are concerned. Anyone who can read this book and understand it's contents has already put in a great deal of study into the topic and those who don't understand but get called into a further understanding through additional investigation can honestly call themselves students of Kabbalah if they so wish. Everyone else may only be armchair enthusiasts and that's OK too - this book is not for the dabbler but for the serious student.

Good but not great

If you want to learn the THEORY of structural dynamics, this is not the best book to get. This book does not cover many of the derivations and mathematics that are behind structural dynamics; rather, it gives a brief presentation of the theory and goes directly into earthquake engineering applications. If you want to learn the core fundamentals and theory of structural dynamics, I would highly recommend J.L. Humar's textbook: "Dynamics of Structures." That being said, it IS an excellent textbook for earthquake engineering, and is probably most valuable for practicing structural engineers or for any earthquake engineering course.

Excellent book in dynamics

The organization and presentation is excellent. It is organized into two main parts: single degree of freedom systems(SDF) and multiple degree of freedom systems(MDF). An in-depth study of SDF systems comes first naturally since MDF systems can be viewed as solving multiple SDF systems. In terms of rigor, many proofs and derivations are provided. These are usually kept separate at the end of various sections within the chapters such that the reader would not get lost in the details. The problems are also wonderful in that they challenge the reader to think critically about the subject. In short, it is a great book for students exposed to dynamics for the first time.

About the Author
Gayle Forman is a bestselling, award-winning author of young adult novels. Leave Me is her first novel for adults. Her novel If I Stay won the 2009 NAIBA Book of the Year Award and was a 2010 Indie Choice Honor Award winner. The film adaptation of If I Stay was released in 2014. Forman is also a journalist whose articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, and Elle. She has visited more than forty countries and wrote a nonfiction book about her travels titled You Can’t Get There from Here: A Year on the Fringes of a Shrinking World. Forman lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and two daughters.

Maribeth examined the monitor on her finger. A pulse ox. She recalled her father wearing one after his stroke. The monitors taped to her chest itched; she suspected it would take a good scrubbing tonight to get the glue off. “Excuse me,” she called to one of the ER residents, a stylish young woman who wore expensive shoes and spoke with a Valley Girl lilt. “Do you know when I might get out of here?”

“I think they, like, ordered another blood draw,” the doctor said.

“Another one. Why? I thought my EKG was normal.”

“It’s procedure.”

More like covering their asses or padding the bill. Maribeth had once edited an exposé about profit-driven hospitals.

With that she remembered the piece Finoula had sent. She might as well cross something off her list. She pulled it up on her phone. It was an interesting premise—about celebrities who were harnessing social media for philanthropic purposes; Maribeth vaguely recalled suggesting it in a pitch meeting—but it was terribly executed. Usually, Maribeth could read an article and immediately see the problems in structure or logic or voice and know how to fix them. But she read the piece a second time, then a third, and couldn’t see the forest for the trees, couldn’t see how to make it right.

It was the hospital. Hardly a conducive workplace. She needed to get home. It was almost dinnertime. Jason would probably be back with the kids by now. He might even start to, if not worry, then wonder. She closed the article and saw several missed calls from the landline. She called and Jason answered almost right away. “Maribeth,” he said. “Where are you?”

The sound of Jason’s steady, sonorous voice shook something loose in her. Maybe because his phone voice resembled his radio voice, it had the power to ricochet her back twenty-five years in time, to those nights when Maribeth and her friends would listen to his Demo-Gogue show from their dorm and muse over who he really was (his on-air name was Jinx) and what he was really like. “I’ll bet he’s ugly as sin,” her roommate Courtney had said. “Hot voice, hideous face.” Maribeth, who worked for the college newspaper, had no opinions as to his looks, but she was certain that he would be an unbearable snob, like all the art and music writers on staff were. “You should interview him and find out,” Courtney had dared.

“Where are you?” Jason repeated. Now she heard the irritation in his voice. And then she heard why. In the background was the clatter of adults and children. Many, many children.

The potluck. Tonight. Shit!

“I thought you wanted me to make the chicken, but we don’t have any in the house and now people are here,” Jason said. “Are you getting food?”

“No. I’m sorry. I forgot.”

“You forgot?” Now Jason sounded pissed. Which she supposed she understood, but it still made her chest clench again. Because, really: How many times had Jason spaced on something, leaving her to mop up the mess?

“Yes, I forgot,” she said, her voice snappish. “I had other things on my mind, what with being stuck in the ER all afternoon.”

“Wait? What? Why?”

“I was having chest pains, so Dr. Cray sent me just to get checked out,” she explained.

“What the fuck?” Now Jason sounded angry, truly angry, but in a different way from before. Like he was sticking up for her against a bully.

“It’s probably nothing, just stress,” she said, feeling foolish for having told him, and more foolish for having told him out of spite. “They’ve had me under observation for hours.”

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I tried, but you didn’t answer, and anyway, I thought I’d be out of here by now.”

“Where are you?”

“Roosevelt.”

“Should I come up?”

“Not with everyone in the house. Just tell them I had work late and then order some pizza. They’re letting me out soon.” She pounded her chest with her fist, hoping that might make the resurgent pain go away.

“Shouldn’t I be with you?”

“By the time you got up here, I’d be discharged. It was just an overblown case of heartburn.” In the background, she heard Oscar begin to cry. “What’s going on?”

“Looks like Mo took Creepy Lovey.”

Creepy Lovey was a defaced teddy bear that Oscar couldn’t sleep without. “Better get it back,” she told Jason. “And can I talk to him? Or Liv?”

As Jason tried to corral the children, her phone made that mournful sound, down to its last 10 percent, and then, a few seconds later, made another sad sound, and died.

“I’ll be home soon,” she called. But they could no longer hear her.

LATER A GRANDFATHERLY doctor wearing a polka-dot bow tie showed up. He introduced himself as Dr. Sterling and told Maribeth he was the on-call cardiologist. “There was an abnormality on one of your EKGs so we ordered that second blood test and this one showed elevated levels of troponin,” he explained.

“But the earlier EKG was normal.”

“That’s not atypical,” he replied. “My guess is that you’ve had what we sometimes call a stuttering infarct.”

“A what?” Maribeth asked.

“Ischemia, probably ongoing for the past twenty-four hours or so, which is why you’ve had intermittent pain, and now your blood work suggests complete occlusion of one of the arteries.”

“Oh,” Maribeth said, struggling to take it in. “I see.”

“So, we’re going to send you to the cardiac cath lab to look for any underlying blockages in your coronary arteries, and if we determine a blockage, we’ll place a stent right then and there.”

“When is all this happening?”

“Lickety-split. As soon as we can get you upstairs.”

“Now?” She looked at the clock. It was past seven. “It’s Friday night.”

“You have plans to go out dancing?” He was amused by his joke.

“No. I just wondered if we could we do this, this stent thing next week?”

“Oh, no. We need to get in there before any more damage is done.”

Damage. She didn’t like the sound of that. “Okay. How long does it take? I mean, when can I expect to get out of here?”

“My, my, are you always in such a hurry?” he asked. He chuckled again, but this time there was the slap to it, as if the underlying message was I see how you got yourself here.

But at this very moment twelve four-year-olds were rampaging around her apartment. Someone was going to have to clean up after them, to find the Goldfish crackers that Mo always stashed away in the closet, or the soiled diapers that Tashi always left in the kitchen garbage (because Ellery still would only crap in Pampers). Someone was going to have to make chocolate chip pancakes for Saturday morning breakfast and to make sure the pantry was stocked with all the ingredients.

And that was just tonight. In the coming days, someone had to get the kids to their ballet classes, their soccer clinics, their speech therapy sessions, their playdates, their birthday parties. To take them shopping for their Halloween costumes, to the pediatrician for their flu shots, to the dentist for their cleanings. Someone had to plan the meals, buy the food, pay the bills, balance the checkbook. Someone had to get it all done, while still getting all the work-work done.

Maribeth sighed. “It’s just I have a house full of four-year-olds and a very busy weekend.”

He stared at her for a long moment, frowning. Maribeth looked back, disliking him already, and that was before he said, “You do realize you’ve had a heart attack?”

Leaving May be the Best

I pre-ordered LEAVE ME because it is by Gayle Forman! I've read everything else by her, so purchasing her newest book was a no-brainer for me. As I began reading LEAVE ME, though, I was a bit disappointed. Not in the story. I can relate to the story more than many others considering the fact that I was at death's door myself--but with a severe infection from diverticulitis, rather than a heart attack, that almost killed me and then took quite a while to recover.

What concerned me was how often Maribeth used the f-word. It made me feel as if Gayle was throwing the word around a lot, through the voice of Maribeth, because LEAVE ME is her first adult novel and, well, she could. I was frustrated because I simply did not feel that Maribeth was the type of person (character) who would use it as often as she was.

As I read further, though, it became apparent that the use of the f-word was out of Maribeth's extreme frustration, discouragement, and simply her disappointment in her LIFE--how things had taken a complete 180 from what she'd dreamed--how she and her husband Jason spend more time apart than together--how she and Jason didn't "get" one another any more or support one another any more--how her friendship with Elizabeth had dissipated over the years--how life with twin 4-year-olds was not everything she had dreamed it would be--and on and on her frustrations went.

Such frustrations, discouragements, and disappointments I could relate to. I think every woman--and man--can relate to how LIFE takes us down a completely different path than what we expected. And then when our expectations become too overwhelming, we have no idea how to change directions--by then, we're so lost, even a roadmap--or a GPS nowadays--can help us get back on the right path.

So Maribeth does the ONLY thing possible to find her way home: she runs away. Ironically and miraculously, it actually works. And to make it even more of a "right-track" experience, along the way, Maribeth meets and makes some new, long-lasting wonderful friendships. Best of all, Maribeth loses her previous expectations and eventually finds herself again--her REAL self.

So in spite of the fact that I wondered if I would finish LEAVE ME because I simply didn't want to read the f-word one more time, as I turned the last page, my sobs of joy for Maribeth were blurring the page and I can truly say that Gayle Forman has another winner on her hands. I will definitely continue to pre-purchase any and every book Gayle writes!!!

The worst part begins after she gets home

We all get overwhelmed at times. Want to pick up and check out of life. Some people day dream about it. The central character in Gayle Forman’s LEAVE ME does it for real.

The protagonist is overwhelmed to say the least. She works a full-time job, while managing her twins’ schedules, her husband also works but seems to have no clue about what she is dealing with, as he isn’t paying much attention to the day-to-day. She literally has a heart attack and doesn’t know it and plows through it until at a doctor’s appointment that afternoon, mind you, after she has taken her kids to school, walked blocks to both school and the appointment, among other things, and her doctor sends her straight to the ER. After a routine procedure, something goes wrong and another major surgery takes place. She has yet to reach her husband because he never answers his phone. Needless to say, she is freaking out and has had, oh yes, a heart attack and she is only in her early 40s.

The worst part begins after she gets home. Her mother comes to ‘take care’ of the kids, while she recuperates, which means that she is essentially not able to rest because nobody in her family can take care of anything without her help, or so she feels. She becomes so frazzled, so you get what happens next. She decides to pick up and leave one day. With no warning of where she is going or what she is doing. Because she doesn’t even know.

When she arrives at her destination, she begins a new life. With no contact whatsoever with her family. Reading it you definitely find it odd. If you are a parent, mother or father, you will feel a weird sensation – how can she possibly do this to her spouse, her children, her friends. The betrayal. Read on. I am still not sure that I can imagine this happening in real life. But people are driven to do things if they are pushed hard enough. LEAVE ME offers an insightful look at modern life, marriage, friendships, motherhood, careers and how it all comes together, or perhaps needing to leave in order to make it all come back together, for everyone.

What every woman feels at some time in her life

Minus the heart attack, I am 44, mother of twins and could relate so much to the character. The wanting to just leave and let someone else be in charge. I felt like I understood her reasoning for leaving, but I wonder what happened with her adoptive mom. What happened with the Dr. I felt the ending kinda left you hanging on some of the other story lines. Overall I enjoyed.
