Coooookie!!!

It was worth waiting for, you guys! The authors of Veganomicon and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World work their magic on cookies this time around.

First off: it's adorable. The pictures, the colours, the font. Yeah, I like the font! It is such a charming cookbook, I really enjoy flipping through it.

Also, these seasoned pros give very handy tips for baking novices such as myself. Equipment, ingredients, substitutions, troubleshooting, they've covered all the bases before laying out the recipes.

And the recipes themselves! Wow. I've made a few that were previewed this spring, the Magical Coconut Bars and Chocolate Peanut Butter Pillows, so I knew this was the real deal. But.....this just has it all. All-time favorites, regional classics and innovative variations, everything you could possibly want in a cookie. Snickerdoodles, Cheesecake Brownies, Sweet Potato Blondies, I mean really. It's insane.

I picked up the book last night (my bookstore got it early!) and made two recipes from the "wholesome" section: Banana Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies and Applesauce Softies. Utilizing natural sweeteners and whole wheat flour, they were hearty, earthy and healthy. And delicious!

I leave you with this: Vegan Lemon Bars. There, that's all you need to know.

These cookies can invade my cookie jar any time!

I have spent a lot of time drooling over the pages and dreaming of the tasty cookies I could make, and I have made (or eaten made by others) roughly 1/4 of the recipes in the book. There are a scant few that I'll never make (i.e. anything that involves coffee flavour), and there have been just a handful I have made that I haven't been thrilled over.

Here is a sum-up of my favourite recipes I’ve tried so far.

Chocolate Chip Cookies - The dough was amazing, but cookie dough generally is. Like a number of other people, my first try didn't work out so well, but after some research on the PPK forums, I learned that reducing the oil to 1/2 cup makes the consistency perfect without having to add more flour. This does indeed work, and this recipe has become my go-to chocolate chip cookie recipe!

Chocolate Fudgy Oatmeal Cookies – Chocolatey, oaty, the zing of dried cherries? Cannot fail. The dough was amazingly good and a really good consistency – I found that letting it sit 10-15 minutes helped it stiffen up a little which helped to drop the cookies a little more easily, but even freshly mixed it was manageable.

Blackstrap Gingersnaps - I had been holding off on trying these because I didn’t have blackstrap molasses. I finally decided to just make them with regular, and these are INTENSE! In a really good way. It’s more of a grown-up gingersnap because the ginger flavour is so strong. But I like them and got a lot of compliments from friends who tried them.

Chocolatey Crinkle Cookies - I waited way, WAY too long to try these. It was largely due to “do I really want to use precious chocolate chips in a recipe like this?” But it was so, SO worth it. These are delectable. Beautiful to look at.

Cowboy/Cowgirl Cookies: THESE ARE SO GOOD.

Citrus Glitters: Tender, tangy, and sweet.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies - Tender goodness. This was my first time making cookies with an oil rather than a solid fat, so the process was new to me, but the results were Most Tasty. Then again, I just love oatmeal raisin cookies and it’s hard to go wrong with them, I’ve found.

Mexican Chocolate Snickerdoodles - I was squeamish about these, quite honestly. Chocolate and cinnamon is pushing my taste combination limits, but to throw cayenne in there too? Ack. Yet I really, really was curious and wanted to try them, so after I had a much braver friend (in another state) say she made them and loved them, I finally made a batch for our Friday night study group since the meal was to be baked burritos.

I was surprised. They were actually really good. The cinnamon is subtle, and the warmth of the cayenne doesn’t really hit you until afterwards, and it feels warm and glowy.

Magical Cocoanut Cookie Bars – I haven’t made these personally, but have eaten them several times made by a friend. They are super rich and absolutely delightful.

Deluxe Cocoa Brownies: These are DELICIOUS to the max.

Chocolate Chip Mint Leaf Icebox Cookies: These are minty, chocolate-chippy, and use real mint leaves. They are awesome!

Cookie Dough Scoops: I make these a LOT. They are always a huge hit. Extremely addictive.

There is something wrong with 3 out of 3 recipes I tried (numbers 1, 3, and 4 in the book order). The first the chocolate chip cookies must have a misprint and mean 2 1/2 cups flour not 1 1/2 total because when they told you to add one cup flour before the rest they must not have calculated this into the total. They are an oily mess but if you add one cup more flour than the recipe calls for then they turn out great.

Next I tried the Chocolate Fudgy Oatmeal Cookies. There was so much oil and it was a sloppy soup of a mess. I decided to add an entire extra cup of flour and they turned out really good. You're not going to be able to follow the flatten slightly with moistened hands or the back of a moistened measuring cup directions.. They just don't work that way.

Finally I tried Blackstrap Gingersnaps. It says roll into balls. There is no rolling with this mess. It is a soup that just spreads thin on the sheet. I thought what the hell let's bake them anyway and they don't get crunchy like the recipe says they will be. They also seem overly oily. I don't know what is wrong with this recipe.

Three out of three recipes I tried called for canola oil and something is wrong with all three. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I followed the directions exactly as written and failed at each until I made a change with two of them. I don't know if I'll try more from this book or give up.

This is a giant of a book and outlines the basic problem with most businesses today....they are boring. Well researched and written, the case studies lay waste to the superficial thinking that you need all sorts of technology to be innovative. This edition of Othello is a fantastic copy. There are ample notes alongside the text, which contribute to the understanding of the play. Well spaced text, also allows for clear reading and annotation. There are also plenty of activities for both in and out of the classroom, aiding student revision and coursework. 5 star Amazon review

Roma Gill, the series editor, has taught Shakespeare at all levels. She has acted in and directed Shakespeare's plays, and has lectured on Shakespeare all over the world.

Another great Oxford School Edition

I performed a selection from Othello at a Shakespeare intensive this summer and tracked down many, many editions for insight into the text. The Oxford School Edition remains my favorite. The extensive footnotes are all in the margins, making it so easy to bounce between the text and the notes without loosing your place. The notes are thorough with the exception that as a student edition, it skims over the bawdier innuendo, but you can figure those out pretty easily on your own. The typography is very well done and gentle on the eyes. There are wonderful summaries of the scenes and history of the play which gives deeper insight. The punctuation is well done (some other editions go crazy with the commas) and lends itself logically to the text. I picked up a copy of Oxford School Edition's Romeo and Juliet earlier this year and loved that one. This continues the trend of excellence. I'm thoroughly impressed.

Excellent resource for the classroom

This text includes it all for both the classroom and for independent study of Shakespeare's Othello.
It provides helpful background information about the play and about the time period in which it's set. In addition, it includes photos and graphics. In the back of the book, it includes a section called, Exploring Othello in the Classroom. This is the best version I've seen as of yet and am glad I stumbled upon it!!

Back in print at last, this 1959 book gives the lesser-known Gershwin brother (the one who wrote "the words") a chance not only to see his lyrics for such songs as "Embraceable You," "Someone to Watch over Me," and 102 others stand on their own, but also to tell the classic showbiz stories behind each one. Sometimes these take the form of name-dropping personal anecdotes, and sometimes they're accounts of peculiar lyric challenges and how he solved them. Gershwin reveals that the original "dummy" lyric for the tricky "I Got Rhythm" was "Roly-Poly/ Eating solely/ Ravioli/ Better watch your diet or bust." Either as showbiz memoir or pure poetry, Gershwin's book is a delight.

If this book had consisted just in the reprinting of the great lyrics Ira Gershwin wrote then it already would be a treasure. But it also contains his descriptions of how he wrote the songs, and is filled with stories of his long- song- writing career. He comes across as a decent, family- person somewhat reserved but basically a very , fine human being.

There are many trivial and forgettable lyrics here. But these are cancelled out by being among some of the greatest popular song lyrics ever written.

Perhaps the lyricist is almost absolutely dependent on the quality of the ' melody' in order to have his words become memorable as part of a great song.

Ira Gershwin in this was fortunate enough to work with some of the greatest of all writers of popular song, first of course and above all his brother, George.

As I write this I am humming the melody of the Gershwins' classic " Embraceable you".

How much pleasure and delight did these two great brothers give, and how much do they still give, to the world.

If you know the lyrics, you know George Gershwin's brother was a witty and warm-hearted writer of verses. His prose paints a self-portrait of a somewhat reserved, witty, erudite, unpretentious man who deeply loves (now, loved) his family, his friends, and his profession of lyric-writing. The stories behind the songs sketch a picture of show-biz life of the 1920s, before everybody had stereo systems; when anybody middle class or richer had a piano in the house; and when parties necessitated a piano recital from anybody willing and able to give one, as Ira's virtuoso brother usually was. Brief snapshots of life with his brother are shot through with almost heartbreaking poignancy as one recalls that George died young. The poignancy and his love for his brother shine the brighter as Ira never explicitly calls attention to them -- he shows, he doesn't tell. A beautiful book, with many droll observations & humorous anecdotes wittily told.

The One Essential Gershwin Book

Although Ira Gershwin was capable of lyric sloppiness -- you'd have to rate his work a tick lower overall than that of Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, Yip Harburg, Alan Jay Lerner and Stephen Sondheim -- at his best his lyrics sparkle. In LYRICS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, Ira wittily sets the conditions that lead to some of his best work. For the most part he wisely allows the words to speak for themselves, grouping his lyrics under charmingly appropriate headings and occasionally describing why one works (or doesn't) and what it took to get there. It's both a delightful compendium of Ira's best songs and a crash course in lyric writing that may make you wish the late Mr. Gershwin had conducted classes to aspiring song-writers.

Insightful insider's guide for concept artists

[[VIDEOID:b8663f7c72b8fccf2e121ea569f5dce6]]For many years, concept artist Eliott Johnson Lilly has been receiving questions regarding the concept art industry and how aspiring artists can get a job. Lilly is a concept artist with ten years of experience and this book is the response to those questions.

The coverage is quite comprehensive. Even though I'm not an aspiring concept artist, I still found the information to be very illuminating. This book is based on Lilly's experience rather than all on facts.

The content covers things like what it takes to be a concept artist and what they actually do. Lilly provides an insider guide and shows you around the industry and how work actually gets done, and how the whole place functions. Its like following him like around the studio as he explains the job. He also talks about the daily life of a concept artist and gives an example of one of his good days and bad days.

You'll also get tips on education, how to choose a school and what to study. There are self help tips on how to develop yourself artistically and technically, and how to create and present your portfolio.

What I like about the book are the many examples and insider "secrets", like how you can get fired for leaking images, or posting work without permission, which is why it's so difficult to find game related art even on concept artists' websites. There are other miscellaneous things like how eating junk food will make you overweight, how people keep quiet when a video game flops, managing gossips and rumors, whether you're wasting your time and your parents money, talent vs hard work, internship. Everything is written in a no-nonsense and engaging manner and is brutally honest.

Finally there are interviews with other selected well known concept artists such as Nicolas "Sparth" Bouvier, David Levy, Stephan Martiniere, Ben Mauro and Farzad Varahramyan. These guest artists will tell you their version of what it's like to be concept artists, and also provide useful tips and warnings. It's great to read about the different experiences.

This is a highly insightful book. It's a 144-page paperback published by Design Studio Press.

Recommended to all aspiring concept artists and students.

This is the book you need.

There are hundreds of beautiful books on Concept Art for video games, but virtually none that actually give you insight to the role of Concept Artist. Eliott Lilly is on the front lines, and knows his stuff. He does a great job giving artists clear, practical advice and strategies. The book layout and sequencing is outstanding. Also unique is Eliott's balanced presentation. Working in the industry isn't all bunny rabbits & rainbows, it can be really hard work in the midst of inordinate chaos. He gives you both sides of the coin while keeping things positive. A huge bonus are the interviews with his peers & mentors in the industry. This book is invaluable for students & up-and-comers exploring at a career as a concept artist, highly recommended!!

If you are interested in becoming a concept artists but don't exactly know where or how to start then this book is for you.

let me first start this review by saying that this is not a "how to" book, instead this provides you with a large amount of resources that lets you explore the route that you want to take. It is an easy and enjoyable read that gives you a thorough description of what to expect from the video game industry as a concept artist. He keeps everything blatantly honest and includes other industry professionals that also give feedback and answer some questions. It also includes real life stories along with his graduate portfolio that he used to apply when he first started.

I would highly recommend this to anyone that wants to go into this field!!!

The second printing (July 2014) corrects color and print issues making this an excellent follow-up to the first edition.

**UPDATE 2**
I have purchased the second printing of this second edition and I am very happy with the corrections. The richer colors add new life to Sibley's paintings, the text is clear and easy to read and the layout is much improved. Page space is better utilized in this edition, allowing Sibley's beautiful illustrations to take center stage. The only caution I add is that, to my knowledge, there is no way to know what printing of the second edition you are purchasing when ordering through Amazon.com.

**UPDATE**
The second printing has been released and should be available at brick & mortar book stores as well as a number of online stores. Hopefully Amazon will make a distinction between the first and second printings so that its customers can order the correct one. In case there is no way of knowing which printing you are buying from Amazon, I offer the following 2 options:

1) Go to a brick and mortar book store and physically purchase the guide. You will want to turn to the copyright page and look for "Second printing, July 2014". If it says "Second Edition, March 2014" then you are holding the first printing with the off colors and light font.

2) Go to an alternative online source such as Buteo Books, where the second printing is in stock, available for shipping and it is specified as the second printing. They even have the option to buy the first printing if one is so inclined.

When I obtain the second printing, I will update this review. So far, I have heard good things: the font is readable and the colors are more representative of what one would see in the field. I'm looking forward to this second printing!

A very annoying feature of this guide is the font. Not the size necessarily, but where many of the bird illustrations are WAY too dark, the font is way too light and lacks contrast. I keep tilting the book to get a better angle as if the text is catching or reflecting light but it's not. I have great eyesight, but I find the text a strain to read. Many of the birds are too dark and the colors are simply wrong. This shouldn't be a matter of opinion. The book betrays itself with statements like "brilliant red" on the scarlet tanager when it's obviously showing dark red; "flaming-orange throat" on the blackburnian when it's dark orange; "bright orange-red bill (never as dark red as many Caspians)" on the royal tern, well it's not bright and when you flip to the Caspian it's almost the same color! The orange-crowned warbler is green, the hooded warbler has a highlighter-yellow face, the baltimore oriole's orange is more like an american robin's red and there are many more disappointments. Some of the bird's faces are so dark that you can barely discern any detail. Sibley set the bar and his second edition does not measure up.

Update: Thank you to R. Matz for providing a link to an article from birdforum.net in which Sibley has stated in a Facebook correspondence "There are a few images (like the male Scarlet Tanager) that are obviously not OK and will be corrected in the next printing, but I think that involves a very small number of images. The font is another issue, and it's clear that too many are finding it hard to read. Tests are already being done to find a way to fix that in the next printing."

Improving the readability of the text will be a major improvement. Along with the male Scarlet Tanager, I hope Sibley will fix color issues with the following birds:
- Eastern and Western Bluebirds (too dark)
- Orange-crowned Warbler (too green)
- Blackburnian Warbler (make the orange "flaming")
- Baltimore Oriole (brighten the orange)
- Lighten some of the birds on which the facial features cannot be discerned

I look forward to the next printing (which should be available this September)and the fixes it will offer. A "Thank you" to B. Walker for contacting Knopf to find out that a fix is in the works and that we should have a new print available to purchase by late Summer.

Wait for a better printing

Sibley's First Edition is my birding bible. Sadly, the font chosen for this edition is so thin I find it unreadable with normal reading glasses. I have no such problem with the First edition. Also, colors are so saturated they are misleading in some species, especially with reds. These problems are a huge disservice to David Sibley's outstanding artwork. I am returning it, as the delicate text is unreadable, making it useless to me, and I imagine to many folks over 50. A huge disappointment, as I'd looked forward to Sibley's new plates and the expanded information in the text, but I can't read it without a magnifying glass! A big mistake by the publisher. I regretfully caution folks who need reading glasses to wait for a better printing.

Disappointed, returned it

No one can question Sibley's technical and artistic skills when it comes to birding, but similar to other reviews, I simply couldn't read the text. The font was too small and the font color was too washed out. Literally, after 5 minutes, I just couldn't read more.
Just to be clear too, I would not classify this as a field guide. It is way too heavy for that, it's literally 3 lbs and I doubt few would venture into the field with this. I work out with weights 5 days a week and this book is heavy, partly driven by the high quality paper,
It's clear that Sibley put huge effort into the illustrations and updating the content. And kudos to him for that! But you have to question the editors who laid out some of the content. I just found the layout often fragmented and hard to follow.
As a pure field guide, I still prefer the National Geographic Guide. It's simpler to use, find your birds faster and provides more succinct and helpful written descriptions.
As a reference source, Sibley's new edition is fine, but for an everyday go to bird guide, it doesn't work for me and I returned it.
