Leonard Ravenhill is a voice that we need to heed. While Brother Leonard is no longer with us physically, his writings still can stir up your heart to long for true revival. Ravenhill leaves nothing untouched in the evangelical church. He wrote with passion, with a holy unction, and with a deep desire to see Jesus truly exalted in the Church. His writings are not for the weak in heart but for the true diciples of Jesus who long to hear from heaven.

About the Author
Dee Unglaub Silverthorn studied biology as an undergraduate at Newcomb College of Tulane University, where she did research on cockroaches. For graduate school she switched to studying crabs and received a Ph.D. in marine science from the Belle W. Baruch Institute for Marine and Coastal Sciences at the University of South Carolina. Her research interest is epithelial transport, and most recently work in her laboratory has focused on transport properties of the chick allantoic membrane. Her teaching career started in the Physiology Department at the Medical University of South Carolina but over the years she has taught a wide range of students, from medical and college students to those still preparing for higher education. At the University of Texas-Austin she teaches physiology in both lecture and laboratory settings, and instructs graduate students on developing teaching skills in the life sciences. She has received numerous teaching awards and honors, including a 2011 UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award, the 2009 Outstanding Undergraduate Science Teacher Award from the Society for College Science Teachers, the American Physiological Society’s Claude Bernard Distinguished Lecturer and Arthur C. Guyton Physiology Educator of the Year, and multiple awards from UT-Austin, including the Burnt Orange Apple Award. The first edition of her textbook won the 1998 Robert W. Hamilton Author Award for best textbook published in 1997—98 by a University of Texas faculty member. Dee was the president of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society in 2012—13, has served as editor-in-chief of Advances in Physiology Education, and is currently chair of the American Physiological Society Book Committee. She works with members of the International Union of Physiological Sciences to improve physiology education in developing countries, and this book has been translated into seven languages. Her free time is spent creating multimedia fiber art and enjoying the Texas hill country with her husband, Andy, and their dogs.

Missing Information

I ordered this book as a rental, because it was the best deal I could find. It was supposed to have Mastering A & P access with it, but it didn't. There was no Mastering A & P access code anywhere. I had to go ahead and purchase it at the last minute, because I was out of time. My class had already started, and I needed the textbook and the MAP. I haven't had time to try to find a phone number or an email anywhere to contact you guys about it. I had to get the Mastering A&P on my own, which was another $66. I ordered this book from you, so that I wouldn't have to pay that extra $66. For as much as I paid for the rented textbook from you, and the MAP's $66, I could have had the set from the bookstore where I go, for the same amount of money, plus I could have had it immediately, plus I could have owned the book. Please let me know who to contact about this. Thanks. Marlene Hancock

Most importantly, the choice of content was nearly perfect... very readable, but not overly wordy... relevant to all readers who want a general overview of human physiology.

The presentation was what motivated the five star rating... The figures were numerous, relevant, informative and intuitive. ... However, there were several innovations in presentation of note. In particular, each chapter had a running series of short clinical correlation boxes, where the relevance of the physiological information was highlighted.... At the end of the chapter there was a concise summary that was easy to read and was competed... The questions at the end were segregated into levels of difficulty and were valuable checks of one's grasp of the material... I can't say enough...

With regard to weaknesses, or more precisely text personality... There was very little emphasis on quantitative aspects of physiology, i.e. equations. Many of the important equations were presented, just not emphasized... this goes counter to my view of physiology as a quantitative science.... rather than just a study of structure and function... but, perhaps, the quantitative aspects are more appropriate for a more advanced audience.... Also, one had to progress substantially into the text (500 or so pages), before homeostatic mechanisms were discussed (where I believe these mechanisms form the core of the science of physiology)..... And, most of the first third of the book related more to cellular physiology than to system physiology... an important subject that brings everyone up to speed, but which takes substantial time to master and makes it hard to apply this text to a single semester course....

A response to Jeffrey Shallit.

Mr. Shallit compares the critique of cognitive science by Professor Dreyfus to 'creation science'. He remarks that Dreyfus is not a computer scientist. This is true. But many 'cognitive scientists' aren't either, cognitive science being an interdisciplinary pursuit engaging philosophers, psychologists, linguists, neuroscientists, anthropologists and sociologists. It is unfortunate that Dreyfus allowed himself to polemicize by using the word 'alchemy' to characterize his opponents, but he has, by far, been the victim of unargued diatribes against his work. The fact is: most of the salient issues in cognitive science are logical and conceptual, NOT technological. Here, Dreyfus broke new ground (although I would have preferred his treatment to have been more Wittgensteinian than Heideggerian). Phil Agre's brilliant book on computation and human experience (Agre IS a computer scientist) shows that SOME AI-workers have found aspects of Dreyfus's work very telling. But, of course, the issues are, again, not empirical but logical in this field. See, for example, Graham Button et al., "Computers, Minds and Conduct" (Polity/Blackwell, 1995) which picks up where Dreyfus left off. Shallit remarks that Dreyfus has been 'refuted': where? by whom?
The fact is that cognitivism is hotly contested by serious thinkers in many disciplines, but Shallit's name-calling (and the comparison of cognitivism's serious critics to creation scientists) smacks of an abdication from serious engagement and argument.
Dreyfus's revised edition is a fine piece of work, worthy of serious intellectual discussion and confrontation. His many aarguments against Fodor, Chomsky, Simon and others have great merit. It is unfortunate that some folks simply close their eyes and argue from authority. But appeals to (even 'scientific') authority wear thin when left to stand alone!!

An absolute 'must read' for people interested in the role of computing in society

This is an absolute classic that everyone interested in or working in AI should have read. It is one of the very view books on a computer related subject that is over 25 years old and still useful today. That alone might tell you something. I find it interesting that many AI-workers seem to be actually afraid of this book. They should not. It may give the reader a far better sense on limits, use and future of AI work.
I would also recommend this book to people outside the AI world and who are interested in what role the digital computer may play in our lives. But the book is not about bits, so if you don't like technical mumbo-jumbo, this is still a book for you.
The book is very well written. Some readers may find it a difficult book, as it also contains some philosophical issues. But some readers may find themselves in a bookstore asking for the work of Wittgenstein or Heidegger and actually understanding what they read (and like what they read) after having read this book.
I have only one complaint. The introduction to the 1992 MIT Press edition is in fact an afterword. It assumes that you already are familiar with the history of the subject. So, if you read this book, you should start with the Introduction to the 1979 edition instead and keep the Introduction to the MIT Press edition definitely for last

What AI researchers can't do on computers - yet

Dreyfus' book is about the history of failure of Artificial Intelligence researchers such as Marvin Minsky to embody intelligence at the human level. It is easy to read, but is rather exasperating. It is like riding in a truck driven by Minsky, and other AI researchers, where they are trying to make a long trek across a country without roads. They keep getting caught in swamps, blowing tires, and hitting trees, all the time shouting "We're almost there!" Meanwhile Dreyfus is a dog in the bed of the truck continually barking at dangers, and the folly of the drivers. Amidst Dreyfus' continuous cacophony of sarcastic cynicism there are some important points on what assumptions are doomed to failure, which he made quite clear by tedious repetition.
Basically there are two types of mistakes made by Minsky and many others:
1. believing they were getting close to understanding human thought,
2. repeatedly announcing same to the world.
The philosophy of Dreyfus in the first 300 pages is largely concerned with fallacious assumptions made by AI researchers. Finally in the last 50 pages (350 page book) he settles down and gives us some interesting concepts that should be understood if we are to seek AI at the human level. He develops the concept of "nonformal behavior" - which we humans usually learn by generalizing examples and following intuition without use of formal rules. Examples: chess at the gestalt master level, and disambiguation of broken sentences.
Dreyfus acknowledges the possible importance of neural network architectures, but dismisses them as outside the scope of his critique. He touches on the poor idea of AI trying to program a full functioning adult, and further carries out a critique of machine learning ("reinforcement learning").
The most important point he makes is that of nonformal behavior -- the non-logical almost Zen-like process that humans must go through. The irony is that we have to struggle with our nonformal thinking to do simple formal tasks such as long division; whereas the computer must struggle with its built-in hard logic to attempt nonformal tasks such as pattern recognition.
The book is for the most part quite dated, but nevertheless, it is very worthwhile reading for anyone in a serious pursuit of machine intelligence. My criticism of his style is just that. I have only a minor criticism of the intelligent content and his restrictions in scope.

Amazing Finale

Legacy of Kings is the final book in C.S. Friedman's Magister trilogy. Legacy picks up immediately following the events in "Wings of Wrath". King Salvatore is building his army to make a final stand against the Souleaters all the while trying to come to grips with his lyr blood and how that will affect his faith. Queen Gwynofar is racing against time to train as a guardian and decipher the series of events after her sacrifice on the Throne of Tears in order to unite the lyr bloodline in her son's army. The Witch Queen Sidera Aminestas and the Souleater queen are building a new empire and plan to loose their vengeance on the Magisters. Kamala is exploring her unique Magister abilities and still trying to fit into Magister society ruled solely by males. Colivar's past is finally revealed and he alone knows the origin of the Magisters and what this will mean in the battle to come.

My favorite part of this book and the entire series is the magic system. Unlike some series I have read where magic wielders draw from the elements, or study various arcane phases and formula, Friedman's system ups the ante a bit. How would you use magic if you had to draw from your own life force and could not replenish it, or on the flipside, if you could draw power from the soul of someone you had never met and when you used it up you simply moved on to another person? Each group is faced with different choices and their decisions shape their lives and the lives of others in dramatic ways.

There are many revelations in "Legacy" and all your questions are answered. There were many "ah ha" moments for me and several things I never saw coming. I love being surprised like that. I recommend re-reading Feast of Souls and Wings of Wrath before reading Legacy. You certainly do not have to nor will it detract from the amazing experience this book gives, but there are many things I did not catch in my initial reads of Feast and Wings and it made Legacy even more enjoyable.

I was fortunate enough to get an ARC copy of Legacy from the publisher. One final comment is on the cover art, it is absolutely stunning. I whole-heartedly give this book 5 stars and look forward to re reading the series and future books from Ms. Friedman.

I'm disappointed

I'm disappointed...not with the book, or even with the story, but by the fact that its over.

The series has ended, and with the letdown that other releases have been for me, this means I don't really have anything to look forward too. And that makes me sad.

As for Legacy of Kings, I don't think it was Friedman's best work, but its far very far from her worst (that particular "honor" goes to "The Wilding"). She wraps up the storylines, but the book felt hollow at times, it didn't seem filled with the same passion and sense of risk that filled the pages of "Feast of Souls", and made appearances in "Wings of Wrath". Things are explained, nothing is left hanging out there, and everything is satisfactorily wrapped up.

But that is all. It met expectations, and rarely exceeded them. The character focus of LoK, continued WoW's shift from Kamala and Colivar (though they are still prominent) to Gwynofar and Salvator (though they were reduced almost to a supporting role at the end of teh book), which was disappointing to me. The strength of the first two books was their focus on the tragic characters, their stories, their histories, and how they grew, changed, and became who they were. The ending isn't one that is born of sacrifice as the other two books were (remember Andovan, Danton, and Rhys?), everything works (mostly) as it should, in the end the good guys win. Which is an acceptable ending, better them than the Souleaters. But it was a victory that came without sacrifice, without anyone having to really give up anything, even though the groundwork was there, it was set, and I was looking forward to the pay off. To the questions that could have been raised and to the challenges they would have presented, something that C.S Friedman is very good at doing. Her stand-alone book "Madness Season" and her "Coldfire Trilogy" both left you with a sense of victory born of sacrifice that left you wondering how everything worked out in the end and hoping that she would revisit these worlds in future works (as a side note I'm glad she hasn't, I like the sense of wonder and the answers I've developed myself and I'd rather keep those than have another book like "The Wilding").

For all my disappointments, this is an excellent novel and a decent ending to an amazing series. C.S Friedman needs to sit down with George R. R. Martin and summon up the ghost of Robert Jordan and give a clinic titled "See you can end a sprawling epic fantasy in less than ten books!" (Tolkien could co-chair).

Good, but not her best

C.S. Friedman writes easy-to-read, engrossing fantasy with an emphasis on character development. She also writes at a nice pace, publishing every ~1.5yrs, while still delivering rewarding reads.

Regarding the Magister and Coldfire Trilogies, I rated (not reviewed) 5 of the 6 books well ( 4+ stars), but Legacy of Kings gets only three. Here is why:

1) Character Focus: In both trilogies she has a powerful sorcerer (Tarrant or Colivar) aide other protagonists keep an imbalance of magic from ruining the world. She does this convincingly.
In the Magister trilogy, Kamala is the primary protagonist (a female, which is refreshing in the fantasy genre) for the first two books; however, her role becomes secondary as Colivar's story crowds the stage in Legacy of Kings; the storytelling is still consistent, but the change in character focus was disappointing. We grew up with Kamala for two books and... had not "bonded" with Colivar as much yet.

2) Perspective Chapters: With the exception of Legacy of Kings, C.S.Friedman has provided occasional interlude chapters from the perspective of seemingly inconsequential characters. These are rarely a distraction, as they guaranteed to provide some cool perspective on future victims or some choice a lead character must consider. These are peppered throughout her two fantasy trilogies, but are almost nonexistent in the final installment (Legacy of Kings). Whereas the first two Magister books we have insight into the people who must be drained of their souls to empower the magisters' craft, readers do not get that in Legacy of Kings... so without these interlude chapters, we experience the "big final battle when much magic is used" but we really don't care about the cost of sorcery.
Whereas the Coldfire trilogy left readers hungry for more Tarrant stories, the Magister series leaves us hungry for "more Kamala" stories (not Colivar).

According to her FaceBook Page, she has written "Coldfire Dominion", a prequel to the Coldfire trilogy that promises to fill in Tarrant's motives. It should be out in 2012. [...]

About the Author

John Fox is professor of sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Fox earned a PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan in 1972, and prior to arriving at McMaster, he taught at the University of Alberta and at York University in Toronto, where he was cross-appointed in the sociology and mathematics and statistics departments and directed the university's statistical consulting service. He has delivered numerous lectures and workshops on statistical topics in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, at such places as the summer program of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, the Oxford University Spring School in Quantitative Methods for Social Research, and the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association. Much of his recent work has been on formulating methods for visualizing complex statistical models and on developing software in the R statistical computing environment. He is the author and co-author of many articles, in such journals as Sociological Methodology, Sociological Methods and Research, The Journal of the American Statistical Association, The Journal of Statistical Software, The Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, Statistical Science, Social Psychology Quarterly, The Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology, and The Canadian Journal of Sociology. Fox also edits the SAGE Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences (QASS) monograph series.

Sanford Weisberg is Professor of Statistics at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. He is also director of the University’s Statistical Consulting Service for Liberal Arts, and has worked with literally hundreds of social scientists and others on the statistical aspects of their research. Professor Weisberg earned a BA in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. also in statistics from Harvard University, under the direction of Frederick Mosteller. The author of more than sixty articles, his research has primarily been in the areas of regression analysis, including graphical methods, regression diagnostics, and statistical computing. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and former Chair of its Statistical Computing Section. He is the author or co-author of several books, including Applied Linear Regression (third edition 2005, Wiley), Residuals and Influence in Regression (with R. D. Cook, 1982, Chapman & Hall), Applied Regression Including Computing and Graphics (with R. D. Cook, 1999 Wiley). He has several publications in areas that use statistics including archeology, plant sciences, wildlife management, fisheries, and public affairs.

Excellent, not only for regression models but for R in general

This book would be a great single volume introduction to R for social scientists and others who do a lot of work with regression models. As may be obvious from the title, it is also a great companion to anyone learning about regression models, e.g., in a statistics course. And if you are more experienced but not deeply knowledgeable about regression diagnostics, you will gain a very solid and valuable grounding in those.

The book has three particularly salient features: (1) the first 150 pages are a very nicely encapsulated introduction to R with hands-on examples that highlight many of the things that are covered in more detail later in the book. If you want to learn R and do regression models, this material is the perfect background. (2) the remainder of the book presents those models in more depth, building up piece by piece and with clear social science examples. Of special note is the attention to regression diagnostics -- which are often mentioned in other texts but not presented in such a practical way as here, with clearly worked examples and interpretations. (3) much of the content relies on the authors' R package "car", which provides a great set of tools for regression models, especially plotting, confidence interval estimation, and model diagnostics.

As an experienced R user, I enjoyed the book more than I expected: it taught me some very useful things about diagnostic tools, and demonstrated the "car" [companion to applied regression] package in a convincing way. I've known about car for years, but hadn't used it much; now I expect to use it regularly, especially for plotting.

Although the book calls itself a "companion" to other texts, it is actually self-contained if you already understand the basics of regression models in general. It avoids mathematical exegesis and focuses instead on exactly how to get things done in R ... and even more importantly, on how to understand what R is doing, how to interpret the results and work with the resulting objects, and how to avoid common problems. I'm going to start highly recommending this text to others who are new to R.

Gentle intro to applied linear regression and "car" package

This book is an excellent how-to guide to applied linear regression modelling. Even though it's called an "R companion" to Applied regression, it provides just enough of the two worlds - theory and basics of R programming - to carry out linear regression analysis on a day-to-day basis.

When choosing a book that would refresh my knowledge about linear regression, I was thinking about three:

- Linear models with R, by J. Faraway
- Using R for Introductory Statistics, by J. Verzani and
- An R companion to Applied Regression, Fox et al

I have fixed on the Mr. Fox's book mainly because he is the author of the "car" package and I wanted to learn more about it, mainly in the context of diagnosing linear regression models.

The book has completely met my expectations with solid applied coverage of the following areas:

- Visual data inspection
- Linear regression models
- Generalized linear regression models
- Diagnostics of LM and GLM

I highly recommend this book for two peculiar features. First, it feels like the author builds his knowledge of linear regression together with the reader, thus greatly facilitating learning process (this fact indeed is not surprising as Mr. Fox has been a university professor for years!). Second, the book heavily uses "car" package, of which Mr. Fox is the developer. "Car" package, on the one hand, helps increase the quality of regression models one produces and, on the other, decreases time needed for building a model.

Great Value

This is a fantastic book and one of those books that I feel was worth every penny. I bought it to accompany Fox's regression text, so I was disappointed that it didn't correspond perfectly, chapter for chapter. However, it's such a good book that I soon forgave the one drawback. I'll try to update this later on (I took the class last year, so a little hazy on exact points)...I just saw that there were no reviews and wanted to rectify that.

Just what I needed

Right after I got the autism diagnosis for my son I realized that behavioral therapy would be our main focus of treatment and due to financial constraints, I would be the primary therapist.

After reading some really heady and intellectual literature on behavioral therapy I just wanted to scream, "Yes, I know, but tell me what to do!!"

A Work in Progress does just that. It is simply written and easy to use. Look up the behavior you wish to address in the table of contents, turn to the indicated page, and there, clearly written is a step-by-step plan. Brilliant. Just what we needed.

Practical, Informative & Accurate

This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to set up formal ABA programming for their child or for anyone who wants to understand the steps of development in specific areas such as making conversation, understanding the difference between yes/no and learning how to read. I found the checklists at the back of the book to be the most helpful. I have had extensive training (as a parent) in ABA principles and Discrete Trial Training procedures and I found that this book was accurate and gave the right amount of detail when I wanted to set up my own programs to be implemented in my home.

This book gives a parent, teacher, or any other person who has an autistic child how to understand the reason for the child's behavior and the how to manage this behavior. It is an excellent source to understand how children can be taught in a classroom setting, or in a different enviornment. As a grandparent of two autistic children this book has helped me understand their behavioral patterns. I was able to see how their classroom instuction has followed many of the recommendations mentioned in this book.

A must for anyone taking MRCP part2

It is an excellent review of all the possible short cases for MRCP part 2. It is organised according to the frequency of occurence of the case and also includes experiences of several examinees which are extremely helpful. In the recent times, I do not know of a person who passed MRCP without using this book.

An excellent, very practical approach to physical diagnosis

Easily the BEST practical guide for physical diagnosis of all. A MUST for all physicians and trainee house staff, whether or not they are taking any examinations. The authors present an entirely different way of practising physical diagnosis, that is simple and easy to repeat.
Cases are listed in the order of their frequency of appearance in the MRCP examination and the skills and methods of physical examinaton are centered around the diagnosis itself.
Also, the methods focused on completing the entire examination of a case within a short period of time, which is key in acheiving success in the MRCP exam.
A wonderful book overall.
