TiticutFollies Review, Un believable !!!!

I have never seen such an atrocity in life, that those poor SICK inmates had to endure ! This was a small scale holocaust, for the Mentally Ill population.

The doctor & guards were as sick as the inmates. I was involved with the jails at those times. I did counseling for mentally ill then and still do now. But that was like the Zimbardo experiment, only worse ! Thank-you so much, have been trying to track that down for 40 years now ! Antonette Royce RNC BS CS

Interesting read

On the physical book : this is the 2nd, expanded version of the original book (MINUS the not-so apt David Ickes intro that IMHO clashed with the content), of better quality overall, with better paper and formating.
My only complaint would be that the final color inserts are not printed that finely, which is a shame, but overall, I feel there's a real improvement. Nice addition of some rare material (made available in a later related book) from Richard Shaver, too.

As for the content : well, I'm not a very savvy reviewer, but this proved to be a great take on the hollow earth/inner world(s), well-sourced, from fiction, non-fiction, and various ancient mythologies & folklores (a running trend, which I'd venture likely inspired the late Mc Tonnies' 'Crypto-terrestrials' idea), with an interesting tie-in to Biblical eschatology.
I've read and heard various people 'into' the paranormal, including a couple from an Evangelical perspective!, praise that book as the best synthesis on the topic, and... I believe they were right.
It's basically looking at the subject using different fields of human traditions, from pulps and Lovecraft to the Bible and greek mythology, and trying to piece a larger view from those tidbits.

It's accessible to the layman, clearly written, it neither dumbs the subject down nor makes it some kind of arcane knowledge, and is 'factual', with no straight agenda pushed down the reader's throat along the "grand theory" developed - though the author clearly doesn't hide where he stands, beliefs-wise (in the expanded sections I believe, written post-9/11, where there is some open pugnacity).

All in all... Good, solid book.

I have had lifelong interest in the world that is normally hidden from sight, a world of myth, mystery and magick that has been around for millennia, but still eludes us. I have always wondered why and in this fascinating book Mike Mott sets out some extremely plausible answers. According to the well researchd conclusions in this book, that hidden world and the creatures that reside there have always been much closer that might at first appear. They are not in some far away universe light years distant from us, but rather, they are right here, right now and literally underfoot.

Mike Mott presents striking evidence to support his hypothesis that the demons, djinn and monsters of yore may still be among us. From the earliest times they have become programmed into our race memory and still occasionally and inadvertently reveal themselves to us as they emerge from their undergound sanctuaries for their own unknown purposes. This book is a valuable addition to the library of anyone who is interested in the myths, legends and lore that have grown up around humanity and I can thoroughly recommend it.

Beautiful, historical book--leaves you wanting more

This is a beautifully written book, which is a wonderful love story, but also gives a great deal of historical understanding about the Mughals and the construction of the Taj Mahal.

Sex and Death

A story of unimaginable power and suffering and how the two interrelate, Taj is a novel that is both serious and compelling. Unknown to many in the West, the Mughal Emperors of India ruled a vast kingdom and enjoyed unlimited power within their lands. To make their reign the setting for a book is a challenge; the reader must be transported into a very different time and place, and yet made to identify with the characters. The book succeeds on both counts. The characters are well developed and unique, while the details of their lives unfold in all of their exotic difference. Throughout, the question is asked 'what is the limit of power?' The answer resounds darkly: death. The terse Mughal proverb Taktya Takhta 'Throne or Coffin' is repeated along the bloody journey of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who commissioned the Taj Mahal, to the throne and beyond. Along with the historically accurate account of the political struggles of the time, a fictionalized yet plausible love story unfolds between Shah Jahan and his wife Arjumand Banu, a love that culminates in one of the most iconic monuments in the world, the Taj Mahal. The story is fictional because so little is known of the woman for whom the Taj Mahal was built. A few passages from old manuscripts and a giant mausoleum are all that remain of her, yet Timeri Murari does a beautiful job reading the architecture itself and the few written clues available in order to construct a moving tale of love and power.

A Mughal History Lover

What a wonderful piece of work by Timeri Murari...this beautifully written story is about love and loss. Shah Jahan and his beloved wife Arjumand shared a deep bond of love and after her death, Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal. The story also covers extensive details about the day to day life in Agra of 16th century and the struggles inside the court of Mughal empire. I definitely love this book, would read it again and recommend to everybody who loves to read.

Does well by doing good, with a few reservations ...

I have listened to Ric's Saturday morning radio show for a number of years, and in fact I'm listening to it right now, as I write this review. I also have given copies of this book to several of my family members. And I have to admit that I learn something every time I listen to his show.

So, why only three stars for his book?

Well, one reason is that whenever I listen to his show, I keep wondering why I should pay him over 1% of my retirement portfolio's value every year to do something I am perfectly capable of doing for myself. I have finally come to realize, and this is not an original observation, that Ric is very clever, glib, and a bit disingenuous. He does a lot of people a lot of good, and there is nothing wrong with doing well by doing good. But at the same time, he is not nearly as straightforward as he seems to be. The difficulty is that the big money in the financial planning world is not made by dispensing advice on financial planning. You can hire accountants and attorneys to do taxes and estate plans, and they can be expensive, but they are one-time expenses. When your tax return is filed, it's done. When your estate plan is complete, it's complete. It's piece work, and usually does not generate ongoing fees.

The real money in the financial planning world is made by MANAGING people's money, especially RICH people's money, and managing it on an ongoing basis. One percent of a million dollars is ten thousand dollars. If you have a few such accounts, and put them all into ETF's requiring a few hours a year to manage, you are talking about a real money machine.

In my opinion, Ric dispenses pretty good advice on financial management, insurance, taxes, real estate, etc., in the hopes that you will entrust your life savings to him to manage, for a fairly stiff annual fee. In Ric's defense I will say that his financial planning advice is in general pretty good. He is not a charlatan.

His investment advice, on the other hand, is problematic. Here are my reservations:

1. He heavily promotes ETF's as the best way to invest. There is nothing wrong with ETF's. But there is nothing magical about them. You can make (and lose) money in all kinds of investment vehicles, including ETF's. ETF's can be thought of as index mutual funds that trade like stocks, and they are very good for some purposes. Insisting on using ONLY ETF's to build an investment portfolio is silly, in my opinion. To me, it seems like a marketing device.

He is also obscure regarding how he selects the ETF's for a portfolio. He advises wide diversification, which is good. He then recommends 16 or so market segments (and thus 16 or so ETF's) to invest in. Why 16 sectors? Why only ETF's? What is the specific rationale for his portfolio construction? What kind of results can be expected with his approach? Well, he sort of says, and then he sort of doesn't. And if you use his service, you have to subtract his fees, which are significant. How significant? Read John Bogle's book, referenced below, about the effect of management fees on investment performance and you will find out. If you look at the Vanguard Three- and Four- index portfolios on the Vanguard website, which I reference below, you can find all of the information about them that Ric does NOT provide about his portfolios, and then you can decide for yourself how likely it is that Ric's recommendations will do significantly better.

2. He advocates having as big a mortgage on your house as you can support and putting the excess cash into the stock market. This might be good advice for some people, but it is certainly not sensible or practical advice for everyone. Many will just spend the excess cash. In that case, paying down the mortgage may function as a form of forced savings. At any rate, the use of a personal residence as an investment vehicle is a complicated subject, worthy of much thought and discussion, and many intelligent financial experts disagree with Ric's advice, for many reasons. Ric's one-dimensional approach to this subject makes me suspect that he has a hidden agenda: He doesn't get a fee on the equity in your house, after all, but he will get a fee if you liquify that equity and move it into the stock and bond markets under his management. This may not be his only motive for giving that advice, but that certainly would be one result of taking his advice, if you were his client.

I gave Ric's book to my family members because I haven't found a better place to learn the basics of managing your finances. If you don't want to take the trouble to learn how to manage your own investments, then Ric's company is probably one of the better ones to consult. If I won the lottery I might well consult him or some other financial planner, simply to obtain the appropriate tax and legal advice needed for managing such a large sum of money.

If you want to learn how to manage your own investments, I recommend two books:

William Bernstein: The Four Pillars of Investing
John Bogle: The Little Book of Common-sense Investing

I also recommend the Bogleheads website.

Vanguard's Three- and Four- index fund portfolio is a useful concept.

The American Association of Individual Investors is a very good organization to join if you want to invest in individual stocks. The monthly magazine is very informative.

The American Institute for Economic Research offers sound financial and investment advice and enlightening economic commentary in their publications.

An investor "must have" reference

This is the fourth edition to a very popular book Ric Edelman wrote years ago that won a lot of awards. He has updated it and added a few hundred pages with this re-release on Dec. 21, 2010. It is almost 700 pages of teaching from a very smart Financial Advisor and the amazon price is about 40% off the retail price of $19.95 you'd pay at a book store. I've listened to several financial people on radio and television over the last 25 years and it is my opinion this man is a very smart advisor and has investing down right. He is an excellent educator (I've paid money to hear him speak at a seminar) and listened to him for several years on the radio. He formulates a good argument for hiring a fee based advisor (his firm manages over 5 billion dollars) rather than taking advise from a person trying to sell you an investment product they make commission on. Ric's no nonsense approach to investing works and I would consider him to be as smart on money management as anyone i've ever heard. For just over 11 dollars you get a wonderful reference and education on financial matters you would not otherwise think of. I highly recommend the companion book "The Lies about money" which is outstanding and explains his investment philosophy into ETF's (exchange traded funds) and the benefits of them. To get this kind of advise this cheap, consider this book to be a bargain reference read that you cannot help but learn a lot from.

Book is great - Kindle edition is "so so"

As for the content of the book, I can't say enough positive things about it. After reading through this, I have a clearer and deeper understand of the fundamental investment strategies and products available than I had ever had before. I finally feel like I can converse intelligently with my financial adviser - and participate meaningfully in developing my own strategy for long term investments and expenses. I highly recommend the book itself.

I've taken one star off the review of the Kindle edition, because the resolution of the included diagrams and images is so poor. The more detailed diagrams, such as the IRA flow chart are practically unreadable on the Kindle edition, even if you Zoom in. (Reading on an iPad).

Just for kicks, I downloaded a sample of the iBooks edition on my iPad, and found the illustrations only marginally better (not worth buying the book again). I tried the Kindle reader app on my Mac Desktop, and had the same issues. The IRA diagram specifically is a multi-page fold-out in the paper edition of the book, and it's broken into three separate images that you can't even zoom into in the Kindle edition.

I'm left loving the contents of the book, enjoying reading it electronically, but wishing I had a paper copy just to be able to see the diagrams and tables clearly.

About the Author

Jim J. Zhao, P.E., is Chief Bridge Engineer with Nolan Associates, Inc., where he is in charge of bridge design and overall project management. He is experienced in design, teaching, and research in structural engineering and serves on the ASCE-ACI joint committees on Concrete Bridge Design and on Prestressed Concrete Design. Mr. Zhao is also the president of the Structural Engineering Institute, ASCE Maryland Chapter. He is the author of two books on bridge design and one on risk management.

Demetrius Tonias, P.E., is an award-winning author of numerous works on civil and transportation engineering. As a member of the Adjunct Engineering Faculty of Union College, he taught a variety of courses, including Bridge and Highway Engineering, Infrastructure Management Systems, and refresher courses for the E.I.T. and PE professional licensing examinations. Mr. Tonias is an accomplished software developer with extensive experience in the development of civil engineering computer applications.

A useful reference for bridge engineers

This book is a textbook on bridge engineering suitable for engineering students, bridge engineers in the early phase of their careers who need to develop their knowledge base, and more experienced bridge engineers seeking a handy reference. Some key strengths of the book are:

- Updating to the LRFD code. Given how massive the LRFD code is, this book serves as a less overwhelming gateway to the code (but certainly not a subsitute for it).

- The scope goes beyond design of new bridges, to also cover inspection, maintenance, remedial design, and other practical topics, in at least enough depth to meaningfully introduce these topics.

- The writing style, and use of interesting sidebars, makes the book relatively inviting, almost fun to read.

It is a nice book

About half of the book focuses on the bridge superstructure. The chapter on management at the back of the book is not very long. There are a bunch of design examples throughout the chapters of the book that you should study real closely.

I ended up learning some more about post tensioning, pre stressing, wingwalls and some other topics inside this book, considering that I didn't take a bridge engineering course in my undergraduate (I wish I did).

If you have a chance to take a bridge engineering course, seize the moment. Considering the long bridges that are being built in countries overseas, it would be handy to know what you would be up against if you want to work on a bridge project or design a bridge one day.

I recommend this book, and I suggest borrowing it from someone you know or check it out from a library before you decide to buy the book. It is worth reading.

I am one year into my first job as a bridge inspector/designer. I bought this book to get a more knowledge about the bridge industry and I have to say so far this book is great. I am learning great vocabulary, history about the industry and common problems that arise when inspecting and designing a bridge. I bought the kindle version and I am 21% in. As a result of buying a kindle version, there are some minor shortcomings like the links that you click on a page; there are no return links. If you select a link that jumps 100 pages ahead, and you don't remember where you left off you're screwed. But anyhow, it is great!

Blomster has written a fine archaeological monograph with grace and logic."

About the Author
Born and raised in eastern Pennsylvania, Jeffrey Blomster received his undergraduate education at Washington and Lee University, Virginia, and his graduate degrees at Yale University. He has been involved in archaeological projects throughout the eastern United States (Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, as well as the Southwest, where he served as an archaeologist and educator for Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, a non-profit research and educational organization. Most of Blomster¿s research, however, has been in Mexico ¿ specifically Oaxaca, where he has pursued his interests in early social complexity and interregional interaction in the Mixteca Alta, a mountainous region north of the Valley of Oaxaca. He is currently teaching at Brandeis University, in Waltham, MA.

A new view of ancient Oaxaca

A very enjoyable read! Well-written and witty, this book will appeal to students interested in learning how archaeologists actually work. Blomster provides helpful overviews of how he chose his site, determined his research objectives and drafted his research strategy. He also describes some of the glitches along the way, giving a very hands-on perspective of field work.
Blomster's research in Etlatongo, a large settlement in the largest valley of the Mixteca Alta, the mythical origin place of the Mixteca people, provides a new view of cultural interaction in early Oaxaca. When Blomster began his work, the common assumption was that, prior to the Postclassic period, the Mixteca Alta was a "cultural backwater", peripheral in terms of social development and regional interaction to the Valley of Oaxaca. This book challenges these views, demonstrating that this region of the Mixteca Alta shows similar sociopolitical processes and transformations as those in the Valley of Oaxaca. Blomster's work is an important and persuasive re-writing of early Mixtec history.
One of my favorite parts of the book is the author's discussion of "community archaeology", explaining how he worked with the village council and community members so that this project would be truly a dialogue with the community. I would recommend this book very highly for students and specialists alike.

Solid research and a good read

As a volume of the series of Case Studies in Archaeology books that explore theory and recent methodologies in archaeology, Blomster’s work is a valuable inclusion. Intended as a learning tool for anthropology and archaeology students, it includes simplified and detailed explanations of archaeological theory and method in the context of an archaeological project, yet it is not too basic for the most experienced archaeologists to appreciate. Not only does it meticulously outline each step of the research and excavation process, it also provides the reader with fascinating subject material. The Etlatongo site, located in the Nochixtlán Valley within the Mixteca Alta of the contemporary Oaxaca state in Mexico, contains deposits spanning almost 3,000 years from the Early Cruz phase of the Formative period to the Natividad phase of the Postclassic period. As Blomster is primarily interested in the emergence of social complexity, he concentrates his efforts on the Formative period deposits at the site. Specifically, he aims to determine the site’s role within the broader Mesoamerican region and in particular to the Olmec of the Gulf Coast.
Overall, this book is a well-thought-out and insightful glimpse into the Etlatongo site and the region as a whole. The primary flaw in Blomster’s research on intrasite social inequalities, which he readily admits, is the lack of data within the Nochixtlán Valley. While he asserts that something different is going on in this valley than in the Oaxaca Valley to the east, he repeatedly uses Oaxaca Valley data for comparative purposes. And while his conclusions, which seem perfectly logical, may indeed prove to be valid, this shortcoming reveals as baseless many of his conclusions concerning high-status households, as he has no “average” household data with which to compare them. However, what he did find was that during the Formative period, at which time social inequalities were emerging, there was much more interregional interaction between Etlatongo and Olmec sites than previously thought. Additionally, his research discounts the notion that most pottery vessels displaying Olmec symbols were manufactured in numerous locales throughout Mesoamerica and instead indicates that these were indeed often traded widely from the Olmec region. And despite his ill luck in not finding evidence of differential social status, Blomster put together an exemplary research design, he excavated in non-ideal depths and weather, and he wrote an overall excellent site report, and one that can serve as an example to future archaeologists.

I love this book. I ordered this at the right time. I had just kinda broken up with someone. Therefore, I needed confirmation or accountability to ensure I made the right decision. Currently, I'm not dating but it is good to have this if you're Christian and thinking about dating or you are currently dating.

An Amazing Resource

This is a wonderful resource for anyone who is considering dating from a "healthy" perspective. I say "healthy" because sometimes we think that socializing or interacting with the opposite sex is something that comes naturally. After four years of being single (divorced), I need all the help I can get to help me make better decisions and also work on my not so great areas. The authors do a great job of discussing issues with self-love, boundaries, and childhood experiences that might get projected into relationships. I appreciated the honest and realistic approach that acknowledges and addresses "loneliness" and how it can cloud your judgement if you do not pay attention.
