Mark D. Kilgus, MD, PhD, is chairman and medical director of the Department of Psychiatry at the Carilion Clinic. He lives in Roanoke, Virginia.

Jerrold S. Maxmen, MD, was associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons until his death in 1992.

Nicholas G. Ward, MD, was professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He died in 2008.

About the Author
Steven Clavey studied Traditional Chinese Medicine in both Taiwan and China,testing in the top 30 out of 1800 students on the Chinese written examinations when studying for certification in TCM gynecology. He has been a consultant to the Australian government on matters relating to Chinese medicine, and was appointed by the federal Minister of Health to the Traditional Medicines Evaluation Committee, a committee which reviews the licensing of herbal products. He continues to be actively involved in teaching, the translation of Chinese medical texts and clinical practice, and he has published articles about Chinese medicine in both English and Chinese.

Very Factual Book

This Is a great book to have as part of your TCM library. It gives an in depth discussion of its topic and is one of the few books in TCM specialising in Phlegm, Damp and the movement of Fluids, so it is a must to have as part of one's on-going TCM knowledge.

This book gives you a lot idea of understanding in oriental medicine. It bring to you real taste of classics especially huang di nei jing and nan jing.The majority books of oriental medicine in English don't give us real picture of oriental medicine, but the book does!! One thing I want to wish is when they using pin yin, should be accompained chinese character. Great book!!!!

One of the best books available on TCM

This book is excellent. For the advanced student or practitioner, this book enlightens the reader on all aspects of Fluid, Jin-ye, Phlegm, Dampness, and their origins. It also discusses herbs in a very interesting and useful way, comparing and contrasting phlegm and damp herbs and their specifics. This is my favorite theory book on my shelf.

Finance is an exciting and key area for executives to master. Over the course of my career, I have developed a significant number of educational programs for executives that cover many fields in finance and their links with business. These included finance for non-financial managers programs, as well as training programs for experienced finance managers.

But I always faced a challenge. One question was frequently asked after these sessions: "This was great, and I'd like to know more about it. Can you recommend a book for me to read that covers these topics?" Most finance textbooks are too complex and long, and the practical relevance for executives is obscured by more theoretical and technical topics. Some other books are too basic and limited in scope, covering only a very limited set of topics, such as accounting ratios. When faced with this question, eventually I would recommend a couple of chapters from one book, some readings from another, or the kind of 1000-page handbook that people love to carry on the plane back home.

After several years, I realized that too many people were asking for the same thing, but "that thing" did not exist in the market. That is why I decided to write this book.

I have noticed when working with general managers that many of them fear finance, the culprits often being jargon, complicated math, and non-standard concepts that do not make intuitive sense. In this book, I try to avoid all this. In addition, the book presents several practical examples of key finance tools, how they link with strategy, and how to implement them with Microsoft Excel.

This book has been designed to meet the needs of executives, both financial managers as well as non-financial managers. Any executive who wants to probe further and grasp the fundamentals of strategic finance issues will benefit from this book.

Easy to read, this is a must have for all finance professionals, students, or for those who are starting in the field. Topics are grouped in an independent manner, which makes it easy to consult as you need. The author draws from his long experience in teaching real-life, top end executives from the best multinationals worldwide, this is a highly demanding crowd, and Finance for Executives lives up to the challenge of his target audience. Accessible and necessary

Like it or not, finance is the lingua franca of the general manager. And while some senior executives come up through the ranks of finance, others (particularly the rest of us who advanced through other functional areas) need to better command finance knowledge in order to effectively assume senior roles within the firm. (Finally!) this is a book for the rest of us. Complete enough to be useful. Accessible enough for the generalist. Current. And illustrated with interesting examples. Now there is no excuse for not knowing the language.

Treading listlessly over old ground, freelance writer Aria offers a biography of the "Russian superstar Casanova." "Dancing, he has always been the greatest," even though fellow members of Leningrad's Kirov Ballet, the author observes, called the teenaged Baryshnikovshort, stocky and quick"hockey puck." Few new facts emerge, but it is interesting to note that the dancer's film appearances began in 1971 with his debut in the Soviet-made Fiesta , in which he played a "handsome young matador . . . ready to meet his lonely fate." A "genius he was" at the barre, and although financial and artistic turmoil have rocked the American Ballet Theater periodically since Baryshnikov became artistic director in 1980, "Misha has learned about himself. He admits that he's moody and that when he's down he's intolerable, but he says he's working on it." This remains a celebrity portrait, never bursting the bubble of fame to find the man inside it. At age 40 Baryshnikov still has a long career ahead of him as choreographer, artistic director of American Ballet Theater, and actor. This biography of the great ballet dancer can therefore really only tell part of the "story." Two earlier books, Nina Alovert's Baryshnikov in Russia ( LJ 12/84) and Gennady Smakov's Baryshnikov: From Russia to the West ( LJ 4/15/81) have focused just on the dancer's early career.-- Ed.) The book relates important events in Baryshnikov's life--his experiences as a young dancer in Russia, and his dizzying number of U.S. dance and acting projects. Baryshnikov's personal side is presented, too, including his much publicized romantic liaisons and commitment to parenting. While the book has little new information or substantial journalistic reporting, it is, nevertheless, a serviceable and straightforward biography for the YA audience.

Best Poons Book So Far

I've been a fan of Larry Poons' work for several decades, beginning with his "floating lozenges" phase and continuing through the so-called "elephant skin" paintings to his more recent, more colorful, more gestural canvases. I have always been frustrated that no one has written a work covering his five decade career, but this book covers more of it than any other--and it has some nice reproductions. The emphasis seems to be on the poured paintings and the highly textured canvases of the late 70's and 80's--many of them in subdued earthy colors, as can be seen on the cover. If you like this phase of Poons's career, then this is the book for you--though it's a bit pricey at over two hundred dollars. Some readers will enjoy the interview and introductory essay, though frankly the introductory essay lost me somewhat, with its discussion of the relationship between Poons' paintings and fractal geometry. I can't quite believe that my mind is supposed to dwell on chaos theory as I ponder these canvases. At the same time, I believe that these works call for a more-than-visceral response. Certainly I agree with the contention that these canvases are not meant to represent dried river beds or mineral formations--or anything else, since Poons's intentions have always been painterly. Instead, for me, they are about surface and texture, about the nature of paint--and whatever metaphors result from the observation of these qualities. So my bottom line contention is that this a good book for Poons fans with discretionary income, at least until the complete retrospective I hope for is published.

I really love this book of letters, because it preserves the mistakes Keats made when he was writing them. I think it adds a sort of human charm to them, but if that sort of thing bugs you, you might want to look into edited letter compilations.
