it's a great book. It has greatly helped me start to ...

If you can get past his tone (he can come across as a bit arrogant and belligerent), it's a great book. It has greatly helped me start to shape up with my financial habits. You get some tough love from him and some good laughs. (I dunno why he makes me laugh, but I cracked up reading the book :). The book is also an easier read than I had originally thought. It didn't bore me to death, as I originally thought it would. A word to non-religious folk or those turned off by works peppered with religious dictum: do not be dissuaded from reading his material. Though he does weave into his writing biblical principals in which he believes, he's not preaching at you. He's sharing his knowledge and understanding and words of wisdom that have been around for ages. Bottom line: I unreservedly recommend for those seeking to make a real change in their lives financially. What he proposes is simple, but it will greatly challenge you; and I have to say it's so worth it. I have already paid off debt in the double digits in less than six months' time by putting stuff I learned from him into practice. I gotta tell you it's hard, but it'll really get you to another level. I read the book cover to cover and feel this book is a must have for everyone. I've found it so valuable that it's become my gift of choice as of late to friends and family. Give it a go. I'd be hard-pressed to believe you'd regret it.

Relevant for anyone ready to clean up their debt mess

A no nonsense look at how to manage finances. Its eye opening...maybe a little too much in some cases. If you listen to Dave on the radio then this book will seem low key. The steps are easy to follow. In fact they are almost too easy its tempting to over complicate them. I like the personal stories of families who made the commitment to a debt free life (now or eventually!)

If your ready to clean up "the mess" then this is a perfect starting place. I've read a number of finance guides as we work to clean up our debt and I wished I had discovered this years ago. I can also see that this is a book I'll come back to as I progress through the baby steps. For example, when I'm ready to really start investing in retirement. Before I read this book, retirement seemed like a dream. But now, with Ramsey's plan, I can see how this too will be in our future.

Saved my life

This book isn't for everyone obviously. But for me, a recovering "chronic consumer", this was what I needed in order to change the course of my life, and it did.

I can't say enough good things about this book. The examples that he presents are inspiring, witty, and matter of fact. Since reading this book about 3 years ago, about 6 months before I married my wife, we have paid off about $XX,000 in credit card, student loan, car loan, and medical bill debt. We have more money than ever in the bank in case of emergency and peace of mind that is worth a lot more. I'm going to be starting graduate school soon and from the looks of it, I'll graduate debt-free with a Master's degree. We haven't used a credit card for 3 years. Some people are stunned when they find out we don't have credit cards. They ask "but what about emergencies?" We no longer spend more than we make.

I can't read the future, but if I don't fall into my old ways (and it's been 3 years so far), my family and future family have changed their fates.

If you have unlimited self-control (be honest), enjoy gambling with your family's future, and think you're the exception to the trend of the average American consumer, then this is not the book for you.

If you have a weak spot for over-spending and are man/woman enough to admit it, want to enjoy a low-risk 99.5% sure way of living a comfortable life, and you if don't mind a bit of hard work and the occasional bible verse, then get this book.

About the Author

Rudi Dallos is the Programme Director of the Plymouth University Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He also works as a clinical psychologist specialising in work with adolescents and their families.

Arlene Vetere is Deputy Director of Clinical Psychology Doctorate training at Surrey University and a family therapist, registered with the UKCP. She is also President of the European Family Therapy Association.

Great articles

I admit, I have only read half of the articles in this book, particularly the Southeast Asia ones. However, I found them all to be interesting and very insightful. I particularly like how the authors focus on domestic politics as a driving force behind international environmental diplomacy. This is a very useful book for students of Asian environmental policy.

About the Author
Lupe DiDonno and Phyllis Sperling are both distinguished young architects, both graduates of Pratt Institute's School of Architecture. They have had work exhibited in the "Women in American Architecture" show at the Brooklyn Museum. They are members of the American Institute of Architects and are practicing architects in New York City. Sperling and DiDonno are also the authors of How to Redesign & Renovate Your House or Apartment.

Broadest coverage, patiently explained

It's not easy to cover such a huge subject, but these two architects do a remarkable job. The illustrator gets equal billing, and it's well-deserved, as the drawings alone are worth the price of the book. The best part is on design. I've never seen a book that allowed you to figure loads and size columns, or provided a worksheet to calculate heating requirements. The final section on construction is more of an overview but the important issues are always addressed. You'll need to supplement your reading, especially since newer technologies--housewrap, truss roofs, engineered lumber--are not covered, but everything in this book is useful.

Good Starter Book

As a person who is looking to build their own house the book provided a good start. It gave a great overview of how to design living area and incorporate ideas to the plan. As others have pointed out it is not current to todays innovations, however, it is a great start. I would use other construction type books to supplement the education received via this book. It also contains many formulas for calculating loads and other calcs for construction. I wish it covered more regarding slabs other than the crawl space one used in the example house that was being designed. It did go into detail about some of the more overlooked things in building a house - ie: stair and fireplace design. Overall, I don't think it would be for an experienced builder, however, it gives someone like me who does not know much about overall design and homebuilding a great start.

Good book for IM rotations

Great for a Medical Student or Intern on their IM rotation. Helpful in quickly pulling up differential diagnosis that you may have forgot about or just can't remember. Makes you sound really smart on your presentations that you could think up so many different diagnosis (and then of course either rule them in or out). Bottom line, not necessary, but really helpful

The book presents an algebraic development of the theory of countable state space Markov chains with discrete and continuous time parameters. The emphasis is on time-dependent behavior, including first passage times of Markov chains. The book discusses measures of the speed of convergence, an algebraic discussion of monotone Markov chains and recent developments of quasi-stationary distributions. It is the worst book about stochastic processes I've ever read, it's confusing, if there were concepts clear in your mind after reading the book there won't be anymore. It is a very useful book to burn.

In this collection of Mexican-American stories, Cisneros addresses the reader in a voice that is alternately buoyant, strong, funny, and sad. The brief vignettes of the opening piece, "My Lucy Friend Who Smells Like Corn," are tiles in a mosaic. Taken together, these vignettes give a vivid, colorful picture of life on the Texas/Mexico border. Family ties are strong: aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents are all present. The stories are often about the romantic dreams of young girls longing to escape stifling small-town life who discover that things are not much different on the other side of the border. Cisneros has an acute eye for the telling detail that reveals the secrets and the dreams of her characters. She writes with humor and love about people she knows intimately.

Poetically written exploration of women's experiences

This is the book which made me a feminist during my undergraduate years, and on which I subsequently wrote my senior English thesis. No author of short stories can turn a phrase the way Cisneros can, and her poetic evocations of different stages of life from young girl to mature young woman shed a multi-faceted light on Hispanic women's experiences in which every paragraph becomes thought-provoking.
In addition, read as a whole thematically, this anthology can be seen as similar to the sort of artistic coming-of-age novels such as Hermann Hesse's Peter Camenzind. The key turning point in this development may be the story "Little Miracles, Kept Promises," which is a series of letters left at the shrine of La Virgin de Guadelupe. This reveals the many layers of the shrine, which is the site of an old Aztec goddess with whom Cisneros identified, and who allows for a new revelation of feminine power in the Mexican heritage which comes out for the rest of the work.
However you choose to read it, this is a collection which will both delight and challenge all who come prepared.

You hit a homer with this one, Fred. Very nice arrangements for the beginner--intermediate player in standard tuning. This would probably be frustrating for a real beginner, but a good challenge for those that are starting to explore fingerpicking and chords down the neck. Songs are available to download from his website for those of you who don't have every Beatles tune stamped indelibly into your brain (I hear Kanye West even recorded with one of these guys!) One of the best instructional books I've bought. How about a part 2 with some more challenging arrangements in low g?

Songs Not in Original Key

Good book, but none of the songs are in the original key. Some of the songs would be in the correct key if you took the chord shapes as written and played them on a guitar or baritone ukulele (not accounting for any capoing that the Beatles did). It seems like the author took a fingerstyle for guitar book and created an ukulele version without any transposing. I think the book would have been more effective if the correct keys had been maintained, since I like to learn songs by playing along with the original recordings. Another thing that would have made the the book better is to have written it for a low-G ukulele, or at least low-G, high-G neutral by limiting melody notes to strings 1, 2 and 3.

Great arrangements!

Great arrangements! I had fun from the moment I opened up the book. For beginners there is a version with words and chord charts for each song. For intermediate/advanced there is a version that has chords, melody line, uke part in notes and uke part on TAB. Who cares if some of them are not in the original key? They are loads of fun!
