Dane goes over many scenarios, all of which any seasoned salesman will attest to having experienced at one time or another. His wit and brilliance teaches one the most fundamental techniques at the same time as allowing the salesman to maintain his integrity and honesty and truly satisfy the customer. It is a well rounded book, and I often re-read it for use on the job. If you can obtain a copy, it will be worth the hunt. You will want this one for your arsenal.

James R. Evans

Professor, University of Cincinnati College of Business

James R. Evans is professor in the Department of Operations, Business Analytics, and Information Systems in the College of Business at the University of Cincinnati. He holds BSIE and MSIE degrees from Purdue and a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Georgia Tech.

Dr. Evans has published numerous textbooks in a variety of business disciplines, including statistics, decision models, and analytics, simulation and risk analysis, network optimization, operations management, quality management, and creative thinking. He has published over 90 papers in journals such as Management Science, IIE Transactions, Decision Sciences, Interfaces, the Journal of Operations Management, the Quality Management Journal, and many others, and wrote a series of columns in Interfaces on creativity in management science and operations research during the 1990s. He has also served on numerous journal editorial boards and is a past-president and Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute. In 1996, he was an INFORMS Edelman Award Finalist as part of a project in supply chain optimization with Procter & Gamble that was credited with helping P&G save over $250,000,000 annually in their North American supply chain, and consulted on risk analysis modeling for Cincinnati 2012’s Olympic Games bid proposal.

 

A recognized international expert on quality management, he served on the Board of Examiners and the Panel of Judges for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Much of his current research focuses on organizational performance excellence and measurement practices.

About the Author
Holly Stiel is a trailblazing service philosopher who innovated a method of training based on the practices and principles of the world-class concierge. Her clients include: Disney, Nordstrom, AVEDA, American Express, Auberge Resorts, Singapore Airlines, Hilton and Hyatt hotels. In 1976, Stiel became the first female concierge in the country when she created the desk at the Grand Hyatt Union Square in San Francisco. Two years later she was the first American woman to be admitted to the exclusive Les Clefs d Or Association for concierges. She is the author of four books including The Art and Science Of The Hotel Concierge, Ultimate Service, The Complete Handbook to the World of the Concierge, Thank You Very Much A Book for Anyone Who Has Ever Said, May I Help you? and The Neon Signs of Service.

Excellent book

Excellent book. Reinforced many of the ways I approach being a Concierge. I'm self trained so it was good to see I was doing things correctly. Also picked up some good ideas. Loved the anecdotes. I also use many of the ideas and values expressed in the book in training new Concierges. Well worth reading for anyone who works as a Concierge or even any customer service position.

The title The Great Human Diasporas implies that this book is a history of human migration, but it is much more. It is a readable, accessible summary of the lifework of Luca Cavalli-Sforza, who has done more than anyone else to reveal the genetic makeup of human populations. Originally written in Italian with Cavalli-Sforza's filmmaker son Francesco, it maintains some qualities of an interview: The Great Human Diasporas is full of anecdotes about the Pygmies with whom Cavalli-Sforza works, the text is frequently personal yet not self-serving, and it clearly shows how he helped tie together population genetics, linguistics, and anthropology to offer a new, non-racist view of human diversity.

Stanford geneticist Luigi Cavalli-Sforza has spent more than 30 years studying genetic variations in DNA samples from the people around the world. The evidence, he says, supports the belief that modern humans originated in Africa, the Middle East or both regions, then spread around the planet. In this lucid report, written with his son Francesco, an educational film director, he uses genetic differences, maps, computer simulations and an analysis of linguistic changes in the world's languages to hypothetically reconstruct the mass migrations of people across continents since modern humans first appeared. He begins this scientific odyssey with an account of his hunt with pygmies-one of the last remaining tribes of hunter-gatherers-in an African rain forest; then he discusses the spread of agriculture, cultural transmissions of behavior patterns, the Human Genome Project and the exceedingly slight differences among the races.

The Great Diasporas gives general readers access to the original, interesting interdisciplinary research of Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, a noted population geneticist. (Francesco Cavalli-Sforza is a creator and producer of educational films in Italy.) Although in part a first-person account, this book is mainly a semipopular exposition of what genetic variation among existing populations reveals about the evolution and history of the human species. Focusing on the genetic evidence for ancient dispersions of humankind-hence the title-the book's principal argument is that migrations have had a far greater influence on human genetic diversity than many researchers have supposed. Of the numerous topics covered, the most novel is the employment of genetic data to construct a tree of all human populations and especially to reconstruct the migrations of neolithic farming peoples into Europe. For the most part, the book is lucidly and engagingly written, though the brief discussion of statistical method (namely, principal components analysis) in Chapter 6 assumes previous knowledge and should therefore have been clarified. Recommended for all libraries.

genes, languages, prehistoric human migrations

The most rewarding part of this popular science book is the middle, fifth to seventh chapters, in which Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, Professor of Genetics at Stanford Medical School, draws on scientific research in human population genetics, in which he has been a well respected pioneer, to describe the migration of human populations beginning about 100,000 years ago out of Africa until recent times. Because patterns of genetic and linguistic evolution exhibit high intercorrelations--even though their respective elements and mechanics differ--he also cites linguistic evidence for this account of migratory prehistory.
The most valuable contribution of this book to popular understanding is that population genetics provides possibly the best though not sole scientific basis on which to construct the prehistory of human "races." By this evidence, we learn, for example, about the migration of modern Homo sapiens to Southeast Asia and Australia approximately 55,000 to 60,000 years ago or about the spread of Neolithic farmer-cultivators from the Middle East into Europe beginning about 9,000 to 10,000 years ago. I suspect that readers unfamiliar with modern human evolution will find the genetic tree of the world's populations on page 119 intriguing. The diagram shows, for example, that Northeast Asians are more closely related to Europeans than Northeast Asians are to Southeast Asians.
For as rapidly advancing a science as human population genetics, it should not be surprising that some findings are dated. Recent evidence suggests, for instance, that North Asians descended from both southern China populations that gradually migrated northward as well as Caucasian populations that migrated eastward, so that some genetic mixing all across North Asia took place and is the source of the observed racial connections between North Asians and Caucasians.
In other chapters, Cavalli-Sforza tackles related topics somewhat unevenly. His anecdotes about the African pygmies are light and sympathetic. While his description of the hominid line is accurate for the time of publication, there are more insightful not to mention updated accounts now in print. His discussion of the links between genes and culture is engaging and humane but from the standpoint of science, no better than educated. His rejoinder to the controversial The Bell Curve (1994) is scientifically persuasive.
I very much enjoyed reading this book, the first I purchased at amazon.com.

Wandering through human nature

This collaboration between one of the great population geneticists and his filmmaker son promises much but lets down on delivery. The style and content of the book are uneven. Some topics are told in detail and with compelling narrative, particularly the account of L. L. Cavalli-Sforza's work since the 1960s to establish correlations among genetic, linguistic, and archaeological evidence for the history and relationships of the major human groups. Much weaker, however, is his grasp of cultural anthropology, whether in details or in methods. He attempts to convey an impression of the hunter-gatherer lifestyle (predominant through almost all of human history until the last 10,000 years) through extended references to his field research among African pygmies.
Unfortunately, though he is quite sympathetic to the pygmies and their way of life, much of the effect is lost in empty generalities (p. 16: "The forest may look gloomy to us but pygmies feel entirely at home and safe there. It is a place where little that is untoward can happen to them, where danger is limited and life very pleasant."), and his cross-cultural examples come almost exclusively from pygmies or from his personal experience of various Western Europeans. Some points of history, used as examples, are in error (Bede was an English monk who lived from 672 or 673 to 735; not a "sixth-century Irish monk" p. 80).
Cavalli-Sforza also seems to have little knowledge of modern cultural anthropology. Chapter 8 "Cultural legacies, genetic legacies" is particularly weak, treating a number of topics in a very superficial way, showing no knowledge of the huge body of literature on, among others, marriage patterns and the incest taboo, national character, or "cultural evolution". Some of the problems with this book undoubtedly rest with the translator, who seems to have chosen occasionally awkward or confusing phrasings in English.
The book is best when it recounts Cavalli-Sforza's personal experiences and the quest for a unified picture of the relations among human groups. His anecdotes and observations add a human and historical perspective to the story of population genetics, and the technical matters are explained in a comprehensible and even entertaining way. He makes a strong case that differences among human "races" are only skin deep, reflecting adaptation to different climates over the last sixty thousand years, and tells some of his own part in the battle over the IQ and race debate (recently re-ignited with the publication of _The Bell Curve_). One suspects that he would be a great conversationalist at a dinner party, and the portrait of the author (along with his substantial knowledge of human genetics and historical linguistics) is what keeps one reading.

A superb, informed discourse on genetics, race and evolution

Luigi Luca Cavalli-Sforza, a well known and respected geneticist, has teamed up with his son, Francesco Cavalli-Sforza, to write a superb, well-informed, literate, and easy to read book on genetics, race, and evolution. Using the elder Cavalli-Sforza's own research and that of others, the team weaves a story, starting with research on the pygmies, that entertains as well as informs. I am a scientist, but not a geneticist; what I particularly liked about this book is that it spoke in non-jargon language, yet did not shy away from the sophistication and complexity involved in the subject matter. I also liked and applauded the way the authors forthrightly and honestly dealt with subjects of controversy, such as the concept of race, racism, race and IQ, and so forth. Their destruction of the arguments of Jensen, Shockley and Herrnstein that the differences in IQ between Blacks and whites is genetic is beautiful and complete. This is a wonderful book for the layperson as well as the expert who wishes to read outside his or her field.

Say It's Not the End!

Author James H Kunstler has wrapped up an entire year in his World Made by Hand series leaving his readers begging for at least an encore. He left a few tantalizing strings dangling that only another book can answer. I for one am ready to linger in Washington County NY awhile longer.

A rip-roaring tale of hope, courage and survival

A rip-roaring tale with sympathetically drawn, fascinating characters and knowledgeable descriptions of how to survive with the energy grid, how new communities form and people learn to work together and fight as needed to defend themselves. It's great fun for the reader to pick up characters introduced in earlier novels in the series. We will sorely miss these people as we await whatever Mr. Kuntsler cooks up next!

Everyone Needs to Read This Book (and the whole series of World Made by Hand novels)

A really fun read that is greatly enhanced by having read the three preceding novels in the Word Made by Hand series and some of Kunstler's other works such as The Long Emergency. The world of these novels appeared to be right around the corner before fracking delayed by a few decades the worst effects of Peak Oil. However, as the setting of these novels suggests, there are many other possibilities that could easy cut that delay short and make us face some of the really horrible effects of overshoot much sooner than most people realize. I'm no prepper, but I don't live in an intellectual cave either, so I take my hat off to William Kunstler for his great work in showing us what our world may look like in the not so distant future.

Straightforward and Interesting

What I like most about this book is its readability. The tone is very engaging and makes you want to read on. The illustrations (almost all in color) are plentiful and are an invaluable accompaniment to the text.

I would agree with other reviewers that the biggest drawback to this book is its price. The price is way too high, in my opinion, particularly for a paperback book. For that kind of money, I want something sturdier, that will stand up to years of use. This is the only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5.

Good geoscience book and science book in general

My only previous exposure to geology or geophysics came from books/classes about the solar system where the Earth is taken as just one example of a planet. This is the first book I've read dedicated to the subject and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

At a high level its coverage includes, the origin of the Earth, geologic time scales, the Earth's interior, the origin of the Earth's magnetic field, volcanoes, plate tectonics, how the continents have varied with time, the interaction of the oceans with land masses and past climate fluctuations.

This book actually covers a lot more material than I expected, including paleobiology and ecology (which I enjoyed reading, but sometimes found it a little too political). There is actually quite a lot of material on paleobiology. It does overlap a fair amount with one of the authors other books, 'Bringing fossils to life', but it wasn't excessive and was well done. There is an appendix with some very nice high-level cladograms.

Although this book doesn't require any particular background, it covers a lot of material and requires some effort to learn it. The authors put in some effort to actually teach the subject and the book illustrates some very interesting science. It also provides some nice illustrations of how science is done.

One nice thing about this book is that it has a lot of color photographs and drawings. That's somewhat unusual among the (non-astronomy) science books I've seen at this level. I found it made the appearance much nicer.

Overall, I liked it a lot and learned a lot from it.

Superb if it's as good as the first edition

I used the first edition of this book by Dott and Batten as an earth science major back in the early 70's, and thought it excellent. I don't know how the new edition stacks up, but the original book was as fine a piece of writing for a textbook as I had ever come across, and geology boasts better than average writers for such things. For example, there is the redoubtable Arthur Beiser, whose many books maintain both a high level of readabilty as well as scholarship.
One major change in the content of the book would no doubt be in regard to the theory of orogenesis, or mountain-building. The first book placed great emphasis on the geosynclinal theory and orthostatic rebound mechanisms. This one is sure to emphasize plate tectonics as the geosynclinal theory seems to have waned in popularity.
The original version of this text was one of the best science texts I ever used in college. If this later edition is half as good it will still be better than 90% of the others.
