MUST HAVE

I graduated college with a 3.2 GPA. I was a hard working and loved nursing. I took a Kaplan course the week after I graduated. I did 1,000s of question on Kaplan. Took my test- 265 question and failed! I was crushed. Used Kaplan again. studied hard. test #2, 143 questions, failed. At a loss, I bought a Lippincott book. Had only Q&A, no content. Did over 1/2 the book and took the test again. test #3, 265 questions and failed.

At a complete loss, I researched what i should do. I was certain i was never going to pass. I was studying so hard and could not seem to pass the test. I bought this book on amazon and fell in love with it from the very beginning. Each chapter had 10-30 pages of content and then questions pertaining to the content at the end of the chapter. The cd has 1,000s of questions, tests, and practice questions.

I walked into the test last week, extremely nervous. Having finished this entire book, I knew there was nothing more i could have done. I started the test, hoping for 265 questions again, as i thought that was the only hope i had of passing. You cannot even imagine my surprise when the computer shut off at 75! I was beyond shocked! I cried there in the testing center! Then went home and waited 2 days. I was shaking when i logged on to see! AND I PASSED! i am 100% sure that this book is the reason I passed. I am so grateful i found this book! A must buy!

The ONLY NCLEX Review You Really Need!

I purchased the 4th edition of this book about a year ago, and started using it in earnest about four weeks before the boards. The chapters that specifically discussed the exam structure, and how to truly "read" each NCLEX question, were essential. The content review chapters (the bulk of the book) were brief but comprehensive. The questions at the end of each of those chapters provided thorough rationales for the correct answers, as well as reasons why the incorrect answers were just that.
The accompanying CD provided valuable feedback regarding areas of strength and weakness. While it is good to have as many practice questions thrown at you as possible in book form, the CD challenges you in the way you will be tested; i.e., on the computer. So when the big day comes, you will be ready for the style of the NCLEX as well as its substance.
Two quick tips regarding the boards: 1) Schedule them for a time of day when you are at your best. If you are not a morning person, late morning or early afternoon test times will probably work better for you. 2) Study thoroughly, but it is better to finish your studies two days before the exam. Give yourself the day before to clear your head and relax (yeah, right!) on the eve of the boards. If you do not know the material by then, you are probably not going to learn it the day before.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I passed my boards at 92 questions, thanks in no small part to Ms. Silvestri's book. Many thanks to her, and best of luck to all of the soon-to-be nurses.

A Must Have for the NCLEX

This is a good book to review all the material comprehensively after completing nursing school and studying for the NCLEX. I would find it difficult to memorize this material straight from the book; without having learned it before. What is it good for? During nursing school, this book will summarize what you REALLY need to know about disease conditions and how to perform procedures and such. Its the short version. But if you want in-depth details you need to go to the book.

What's it good for on NCLEX? This book helped me to see the material I learned from in NCLEX perspective and helped give me a mindset for what to look for. After taking the NCLEX I can say this book DEFINITELY helped me on most questions to say --- that's DEFINITELY the answer. I believe it helped me see right through NCLEX's hidden topics within the question.

I breezed through NCLEX first time with 4 days of studying after graduation in 85 questions.

So how do I know it works? (I only had 4 days to study because of a family event that happened.... but in those 4 days I read this book from 7am-1am the next day for 3 1/2 days; I read the ENTIRE book). I also used it during nursing school and made a 3.72 GPA; this book was awesome and I always recommended it to others.

The book gave me the REVIEW I needed. Because I'll be honest, there's a LOT I had forgotten that I covered within the past year of nursing school. This book brought me up to date on all the specific conditions and treatments within just 3 1/2 days.

So anyway. It did its job. And again, to those in nursing school: the details ARE important and you won't gain understanding of the BIG concepts through this book. You learn that in school. This is a review. Not a substitute for messing around in nursing school for 2 years and then deciding you want to learn the material to pass NCLEX.

An authoritative and reference textbook

One of the best book on inborn error of metabolism combined with pediatric endocrinology. Well written, clinically oriented and provide deep understanding of each disease. Highly recommend to all endocrinogist with special interest in metabolic diseases. The initial sections of acute clinical and emergency management both from diagnostic point of view and initial therapeutic intervention are valuable part of the textbook. The screening of inborn error of metabolism is well written and the classification of diseases making the reading of textbook a pleasant experience.

A Lingering Sense of Hope

'Until Angels Close My Eyes' is yet another example of Lurlene McDaniel's notoriously melancholy novels. As in her other books, McDaniels is able to portray a sorrowful mood through the characters. However, the final outcome is both depressing and uplifting at the same time. Had the book not had a little hope to cling on to at the end, I wouldn't have enjoyed reading it, but it did. The final message was that in the end, not all was lost.
Leah Lewis-Hall is a seventeen year old english teenager living with her mother and stepfather, Neil. Neil was Leah's mom's fourth and favorite husband, so Leah hoped he was around to stay. She was looking forward to living the rest of her life with just her, Neil, and her mother, that is until she was shot down with devastating news. Neil has cancer. A malignant cancer that could threaten his life. Leah liked Neil, a lot, and didn't want to see yet another father figure dissappear from her life, especially one she cared about so much. On top of that heart-breaking news, Leah had to face the reality that the cancer she once had could also return. So Leah had to live in constant fear of two lives being lost, hers, but mainly Neil's.
There was only one person that provided Leah with the comfort she needed to get through it all. Ethan, her sandy-haired, blue-eyed Amish boyfriend. She had met Ethan last summer while working in an Amish community, and instantly they fell in love with each other. The only problem was that Ethan was Amish, and Leah was English. The two worlds clashed immensly and there was a huge barrier inbetween the two cultures. Lately, Ethan had been experimenting with English ways, dressing English, and even moving out of his Amish household to live with Leah and her family. Leah and Ethan both knew their love was genuine and pure,and they both needed and cherished this love. But they also knew that this culture barrier between them could cause problems for both of their lives. Can Ethan and Leah's love hang tough through the biggest hurdeles of their lives? Can they defy the barrier between their two seperate worlds?
Although there is almost a sad tone throughout the whole book, there are instances that shine through with hope. For example, the angel Gabriella that saves Leah from her cancer, and the changed view from Leah on her mother. At the end of the novel, Leah had a new respect for her mother that came from all of her past and recent experiences. I enjoyed reading this novel because McDaniel balanced Neil's deteriorating cancer condition with certain episodes of hope that made you want to keep reading. The questions,"Will Neil live or die?" and, "Will Leah and Ethans love be able to hang tough?" are not really answered until the last few chapters. This factor makes 'Until Angels Close My Eyes' a quick read that you won't want to put down. My advice is, if you've never seen somebody turn something negative into a postive thing, read this book!!

Until Angels Close My Eyes was a very heart-warming novel

Leah is a strong young lady who is trying to complete the puzzle of her life that has never been finished. When she was sixteen-years-old she was diagnosed of bone cancer and the only thing she could hope for was a miracle, but instead she received the light of angels. After a while everything in Leah's life was going fine till she received the news that her loving stepfather, Neil had cancer. Leah didn't know what to do with herself, so she decided she needed a brake and to visit her true love Ethan at the Amish community. Ethan chose to make one of the most effective changes in his and Leah's life that left Leah in a complex situation that made her realize the reality ahead of her.

Until Angels Close my Eyes is an amazing book to read it pulls you in and gives you the picture of Leah's life. McDaniel made the characters and plot so realistic that I felt as if I was standing there with Leah and watching her grow into the strong young women she really is thought out the story.

Until Angels Close My Eyes is a beautiful story about love and what it takes to reach it. I would recommend this outstanding novel to anyone and everyone. If you enjoyed one of the books from the Angels Trilogy you would definitely take pleasure in this one. You also might end this book in tears.

WIll Their Love Last?

The book, Until Angels Close My Eyes by Lurlene McDaniel is a great book. Leah (main character) thinks her battle with cancer is over, but the disease that haunts her past has struck someone she loves. Leah finds comfort in a visit to Amish country to see Ethan. Ethan (boyfriend) is changing, his taste in what community he wants to live in. Can their love stay together through all these changes??
On a rating, one through five, five being the best, I would rate this book a four. It was a great book, but it could have had a little more development in the beginning it was kind of slow. There could have been not so much background information. Once it started to pick-up, I couldn't put it down. The author had a great story line. It was realistic, easy to fallow, and I could put myself in Leah's position. You could tell she put a lot of effort in her book. I thought the description of the cancer was very in-depth. She used all the terms in which the doctors would really use. Not just in this book, but also in all of her books I have read.

About the Author
Angela Thirkell (1890-1961) wrote many works of fiction and non-fiction, including twenty-nine 'Barsetshire' novels, which won her great popularity and acclaim. The first of these, High Rising, was published in 1933. Her relatives included Edward Burne-Jones, Rudyard Kipling and Stanley Baldwin, and her godfather was JM Barrie. She was twice married and had four children.

One of my favorite Barsetshire books

I have read almost all of Angela Thirkell's books. Pomfret Towers was the first of her Barsetshire novels that I read, and it continues to be one of my favorites. The characters are so memorable - Sally, Alice, Gillie, Lord and Lady Pomfret, Merry, Hermione and her wretched son and burdened daughter - the list goes on an on. The storyline centers around a pre WWII long weekend at Pomfret Towers and relationships that form as a result. Highly recommended for anyone who is already a reader of Thirkell or those who love a good country house read.

Good writer, but slow for me.

I gave this 3 stars because the author is a good writer----it's just that this book was 1st published in 1938 England and there are many references to things that must have been obvious to pre WWII English readers, but I couldn't understand. And after a while, I didn't want to. Lots of talking, witty for the time, I guess. Nothing much happens while I was reading. I soon gave up. Maybe I should have stuck with it until something actually happened-----if anything ever did. Oh, well.

I remember reading many of her books decades ago, and I really enjoyed them, then. They always are about upper middle class Brits in their country homes in the 1930's. But they have lost their charm for me now- no character development- no surprises, no depth. As with all books- its all about what you are in the mood for at a particular time in your own life. When I originally read them, my own life was in such tumult that her books were very soothing to me.

About the Author
Currently, I am a shift Division Chief for a Southern California Fire Department where I am assigned to manage the Special Services Division. In addition to managing the emergency responses for the city my responsibilities include managing the EMS Division, emergency Operations Center and the CERT program. With 28 years of experience in the fire service proctoring oral interviews and promotional examinations I decided to write several books for those aspiring firefighters. I have conducted numerous seminars at national conventions to teach and mentor both promotional and entry-level candidates alike. My objective in writing these books is to help the aspiring firefighter set a clearly defined goal, laying out the steps to reach it and diligently working to become the ideal candidate and ultimately a professional firefighter. The three books and one Audio CD I have written were published through Freespool Enterprises, DBA Aspiring Firefighters. In addition, my wife and I founded EMS Safety Services, Inc., which specializes in the development of emergency response educational programs and the retail of quality cost-effective emergency response products. Possibly Obsolete!

Much of what is said is common sense but I have gained some insight into the interview process. Hopefully it will help get hired. I will find out here shortly and hopefully report back. Anyone interviewing should buy it, its a small price to pay even if you learn one thing. You never know if that one thing helps you get hired.

I believe things are changing in the fire service just as they are in the rest of society. If you live in a larger, liberal jurisdiction this book probably won't help you. The entire hiring process is changing in order to give everyone a fair shot. The CPAT and the video based testing are both borderline comical. The interview does not allow you to really show why you are a good canidate. Its just a bunch of P.C. BS and trickery. If you want to pass the interview, do this.
1. Know EVERYTHING about the dept.
2. Think of situations where you made a moral decision
3. Think of situations where you had to do something you didn't want to do
4. Think of situations where you worked as a team to solve a problem
5. Think of situations where you made a mistake and you learned from it.
6. RELAX
7. Listen to the questions carefully, speak slowly and clearly.
8. Be ready for trick questions.

This books gives you the best foundation that a individual who is testing needs to be in the top ranks of any departments list! I started reading this book in September while I started a joint testing process with three departments. Made it through a panel interview, and three chiefs interview. I felt like if it wasn't for this book, I wouldn't have been able to clearly think out my answers and present them confidently. This book makes you think about your answers and it also gives you great example of how you should do it. I just got my conditional offer of employment from one of the departments. Dont think about getting this book! Just do it!

I purchased this book to prepare myself for my oral interview. I read this book cover-to-cover for an entire month up until my oral interview. I had my oral interview yesterday and nearly ALL of the 12-16 questions they asked me weren't directly from this book almost verbatim! They changed some questions just slightly to make them more applicable to the department by throwing a specific time into a situational question or by saying "How have you prepared for this interview?" instead of "How have you prepared for this position." The root of the questions were still the same, however. Because I had heard these questions before and had practiced how I would answer them, I was able to give unhesitating and well thought out responses as soon as they finished asking the question. I am confident to admit that without the aid of this book I wouldn't have performed anywhere close to as well as I performed during my interview. The only question that comes to mind from yesterday's interview that wasn't in this textbook was "Give an example of a mistake you made. How did you correct this mistake and what did you learn from it?"

learn about the fundamentals of animation

As an animation teacher, I went through a lot of books as support for my 2D class; this one is on my top list and I would recommend it to any animation student new to the field who want to learn about the process and the principles of animation.

The book is clear, with beautiful illustrations. Many animation books use styles that often turn me off as being too cartoony or dated but this one is very appealing. Each chapter is well documented with simple explanation and visuals. I was particularly impressed by the clarity of the layouts and X.sheet section, as those are usually a nightmare to explain to students.

It offers a wonderful overview of the fundamentals of animation and covers all the aspect of the profession, from storyboard to animating to editing. Even if this is about hand drawn traditional animation, those principles can be applied to 3D and computer animation.

As an animation artist, I am familiar with the author's work and eagerly awaited the arrival of this book. It did not disappoint!

It is good for beginners and seasoned veterans alike. The sequential animation drawings - along with their respective numberings and spacing charts - are worth more than the price of the book. They are an excellent way for the student of animation to see how the drawings are spaced to provide the true 'spark of life' so necessary in the success of the animated image 'coming alive'. The book ranks up there with the Preston Blair books, Thomas and Johnston's ILLUSION OF LIFE, and Richard William's THE

ANIMATOR'S SURVIVAL KIT. The chapters on Storyboarding, Layout and Background, along with many other animation gems, are there as well. A true tour de force!

A Real Sleeper and a Must Have

This book can only be classified as a real sleeper, it is part of a series of art books that normally would not be thought of as being "must have" titles for aspiring animation artists. This particular book is in the same catagory as Richard Williams "The Animators Survival Guide". It is a serious insider text on traditional 2D animation production techniques and animating specifically. Anyone wanting to learn 2D animation or studying 3D animation will be glad they added this title to their library. It covers all aspects of traditional animation production and is packed with knowledge.

The engaging story of America gaining its independence

"From Colonies to Country: 1735-1791" is the third volume in Joy Hakim's "A History of US." This book begins with the British kicking the French out of North America and ends with the American colonists winning independence from the British. After a first chapter that establishes the principle of Freedom of the Press that would come to play a key part in not just the American Revolution but throughout the entire history of the United States, the rest of the book falls into four main sections. The first (Chapters 2-6) covers the transition as the English essentially kicked the French out of North America as a result of the French & Indian War. The second (Chapters 7-14) traces the growing dissent in the American colonies with British rule that ended in the Boston Massacre and the Battles of Lexington and Concord. The third (Chapters 15-31) details the Revolutionary War, including the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence. The final section (Chapters 32-42) covers the means by which the thirteen colonies were turned into a country through the writing and adoption of the Constitution. The back of the book contains an extensive look at great documents including not only the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but also the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom. Hakim also talks about how to consider great documents (and stay awake while doing so). The Atlas this time around focuses on the question of how the politics of cartography comes into mapmaking.
There is a lot of information here presented in a way that will speak to young readers raised on computers and hooked on the Internet. There are features on topics of interest scattered throughout the book and the margins are filled with various definitions, mini-biographies, and various facts. I liked the way she included actual signatures from various signers of the Declaration of Independence. These volumes are richly illustrated with historic prints, paintings, etchings, and maps (as well as contemporary maps that are more historically accurate). Besides paying as much attention to the style of presentation as she does to the information being provided, Hakim plays the role of teacher throughout the volume, anticipating student questions and demanding they take the perspectives of the various parties involved in this history. I can see what those home school their children are enamored of this series, because she saves parents from having to doing the engaging. These books do it for them.
