About the Author
H. E. Jacob wrote some forty books during his prolific career, including biographies, poetry, dramas, and histories. After fleeing Nazi-occupied Germany, he moved to New York and gained American citizenship. In the early fifties he returned to Germany, where he died in 1967.

Peter Reinhart is the author of many award-winning books on bread and culture, including The Bread Baker’s Apprentice: Mastering the Art of Extraordinary Bread and Peter Reinhart’s Whole Grain Breads: New Techniques, Extraordinary Flavor. He is a baking instructor at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Food for thought!

Some very interesting insights connecting the art of breathd-making and consumption with global and local events. I knew about the connection between bread and the French Revolution, but most of the other connections boggled my mind, especially since there miht well be more than a simple grain of possible truth in them.

Good book on the history of bread

Good book on the history of bread, but the first section on the Bread of Prehistoric Man is basically speculation based on evolutionary theory without any historical data to verify his conclusions. Of course, Jacob lived before the major weaknesses of evolutionary theory had been demonstrated. If you like bread, this book is a good resource to have.

He nailed it....

This book has many virtues, but the one I was most grateful for is that Matt make it impossible NOT to understand how to wet-scrape braintan. He anticipates the reader's every possible wrong turn. So many skilled craftsmen are tongue-tied. Even if they know what they are doing, they cannot put themselves into the mind of a newcomer to their craft. Matt not only has a rare knack for doing just that, he also knows how to keep the nervous newbie calm. Anyone who follows Matt's directions will have a beautiful piece of buckskin, soft as velvet but tough enough to turn the meanest thorns...

Writing a regular outdoors column for four SC newspapers and having been involved with primitive skills for over ten years, I can honestly say that Mr. Richards' book on hide tanning with the brain-tan method is one of the best I have seen. I first learned to tan hides with this method when I was still in high school and have enjoyed making my own buckskin ever since.
When I got my copy of Deerskins into Buckskins in the mail, my learning started with the picture on the cover and didn't stop until I reached the back cover. Specifically, the front cover photo shows a skin sack smoking, but the hide is hung from the rump not the neck as I had been doing. Mr.Richards goes on to say that this allows the hide to hang with fewer folds and so, prevents streaking from the smoke. He's right!!
Probably the best bit of knowledge I gained from this book is glueing the seam with regular elmer's glue, instead of sewing it shut or using clothespins. The glueing makes a tighter seam, is faster than the other methods, and because it is air-tight, it forces the smoke to penetrate the hide instead of rushing out of the gaps. Due to the pressure, the hide balloons, further reducing any folds or wrinkles in the hide. This is the fastest method I have ever tried.
These two bits of knowledge alone make the book worth the price asked but when you combine it with the author's easy, simple style of writing, you have a true gem. I've read it from cover to cover at least twice and will undoubtedly read it again. Take it from an experienced tanner, you won't be dissappointed.

Very Clear, Very Helpful

This book shows, in great detail and easy-to-understand language, the basic steps for natural tanning. Compared to other books I have read, this one really covers all the bases in a clear and concise way. Where other instruction books leave you saying, "Huh?", this one caters to those of us who REALLY have never done this before!
Excellent step-by-step directions. I highly recommend this book.

What a fun book...

This book starts as a clever twist on the "this little piggie.." childrens rhyme and turns into a fun counting book with a humorous ending. This is a book that both kids and adults can enjoy. The illustrations are great as well and they contain some fun surprises for especially observant children. Highly recommended.

Great book for my two little piggies

Both of my kids (age 2 and 5) LOVE this book and want to read it practically every day. It is really cute and they love pointing out where the big bad wolf is hiding on every page. The big bad wolf is certainly a character and they find it very amusing!

The Big, Bad Wolf wants to eat all 20 piggies, but they surprise him in the end! Good book for kids learning to count beyond 10, and still high interest for my 5yr old. She likes to find where the wolf is hiding on every page.

Good text, no illustrations as described

This is a review of the Everyman's Library Cloth edition of The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, ISBN-10: 0679410473. I am not reviewing the actual work of The Odyssey, as it is a classic and Homer does not need my review, but I am reviewing the Everyman's Library edition of the work. The cloth hardcover, sewn binding, ribbon, and text layout is nice. However I was expecting illustrations by Barnaby Fitzgerald, as described in Amazon's description of this edition, and I could not find any illustrations in any of the pages in this book. Perhaps the illustrations are in another edition with a different ISBN number.

Homer, oh homer...

I must say that the book actually is enjoyable. I am not one to get "into" books all that often but this classic is still around for a reason. I would have knocked off some stars because my copy has writing all through it. Apparently someone used it for some sort of class and this idiot never heard of a post it note. Could have saved me A LOT of frustration just by avoiding writing in, what is now, my book...
I recommend that if you or anyone you know enjoys literary master pieces, pick up a hard copy of the Odyssey and give it as a present.

The Odyssey is truly a classical book beyond imagine. The whole book is written in iambic pentameter, a feat quite unlike reality. The book quality is absolutely perfect and it comes along with a strip to bookmark your spots. This is not a Study Guide. It is a workbook. There are VERY FEW questions. The questions are laid out more like ... Describe the process of head to toe assessment of the child.
Extremely few multiple choice questions. No rationales. I returned the book. Not worth $5 let alone $17

I bought this book because I needed it for a class I am currently taking. This book in my opinion is very poorly written. There are chapters that I have read in sequence that seem to repeat themselves. If someone is looking for a book to read for their personal use, don't pick this book.
