Any Given Monday: Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them for Athletes, Parents, and Coaches - Based on My Life in Sports Medicine, by Jam

From the most renowned sports surgeon in the country, “a gold mine of contemporary cautionary information for the sports-minded” (Kirkus Reviews) to promote the prevention of sports injuries, especially among young people—featured on CBS This Morning.

Every year more than 3.5 million children will require medical treatment for sports-related injuries, the majority of which are avoidable through proper training and awareness. Dr. James Andrews, an orthopedic surgeon, sports medicine pioneer, and consultant to some of the fiercest teams in college and professional sports, distills his practical wisdom and professional advice to combat a growing epidemic of injury among sports’ most vulnerable population: its young athletes.

Any Given Monday is a sport-by-sport guide to injury prevention and treatment, written specifically for the parents, grandparents, and coaches of young athletes. Dr. Andrews covers every major sport, including football, gymnastics, judo, basketball, tennis, baseball, cheerleading, wrestling, and more. From identifying eating disorders to preventing career-ending ACL tears and concussions, Dr. Andrews reveals how young athletes can maximize their talent and maintain a lifetime of health—both on the field and off.

From Booklist
Despite widespread worries of sedentary youth and obesity, many kids are playing sports with greater intensity than ever before. Whether pushed by parents or driven by their own dreams, young players who train as hard as the pros put themselves in danger of major-league injuries. Andrews has seen it all in his long and celebrated career, treating living legends, college phenoms, and kids whose overtraining destroyed their potential. He hopes here to educate parents, grandparents, coaches, trainers, and other medical personnel about safer ways to develop talent and prevent sports injuries from occurring. After a sobering overview, Andrews offers quick recommendations for a wide variety of high-participation sports, from baseball, football, basketball, and soccer to skiing, snowboarding, swimming, and cheerleading (which he calls completely out of control). Much can be accomplished simply with rest and cross-training. While it is unlikely that many will read this cover to cover, it makes a great pass-around for parents and grandparents and demands to be read by youth coaches, trainers, and sports administrators, who, hopefully, will heed Andrews’ call for change. --Keir Graff

A must read for every sports parent
By Anthony Catarelli
Every parent needs to read this book if you have kids in sports. As a travel baseball coach myself I try to explain to parents our main concern is the health of their child. I have seen over the years other teams pitching a 12 year old 80 pitches and than same kid play SS the second game of a doubleheader. Seen kids at 16 years old throw over 90 pitches and play SS next game. Parents have come to me after a double header and ask why their kid did not play 3rd base after pitching the First game pitching and throwing over 80 pitches ? My answer was he pitched a great game and his pitch count was 80 pitches so we DH him the second game but rest his arm and not play the field so his arm gets rested. His dad said oh he was fine and no reason he should have sat! My reply was why would you as a parent want to over use and take a chance to hurt his arm like so many parents do? Also told him if they are upset than they should look for another team to play on because no good coach would agree with him and if they did agree they should not be coaching. I was so happy when this book came out from one of the top great Doctors of all of sports Dr Andrews. I now tell every parent to read this book because if I can help just one kid prevent hurting his arm than I'm happy. Bottom line is there is a term of over training! Thank you Dr Andrews for writing this excellent book, Tony C.

Great book - easy to read, informative and proactive
By Lariah
This is a great book that anyone involved in youth (including college-level) sports should read- parents, coaches, and young athletes. It is great as a reference for athletic activities. Obvious sports such as basketball, football, soccer, etc. are covered, as are dance, cheerleading, and equestrian sports. The book also features some background on the history of sports medicine, his life in medicine, and a very technical treatise on(think surgeon's textbook) the UCL reconstruction surgery, aka Tommy John surgery. I really enjoyed reading the book, both as a parent of a son who is *wild* about sports (and a bit afraid to let him play football!), and coming from a family of athletes (two of whom compete(d) at the college level - including one who is still suffering from the after effects of injuries and surgeries from sports.

This is obviously not just a career for Dr. Andrews - it is a passion. Follow the money - all his proceeds for the book are going to the STOP Campaign - Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention. [...] I really hope that with the guidance of such an expert the culture of "tough it out" with youth sports injuries, particularly concussions, can change. This should be required reading (with quizzes!) for all youth coaches and parents!

Must Read for Parents of Youth athletes
By Bruce Kelly
This book should be a must read for all parents of youth athletes as it gives a perspective on young athletes from one of the leaders and pioneers in the sports medicine field. It will dispel many of the commonly held myths about youth athletics such as early specialization, year round play and the like.
Every parent owes it to their child to do what is in their best long term interest and this book will go a long way in furthering that goal.
