A beautiful summary

As a structural engineer who works with the IBC daily, I was excited to get this book focused right on what we do, especially since the 2009 IBC is newly adopted locally. When it arrived, I found it to be a large book (682 pages) with beautiful figures and attractive page layout. It gives a concise history of each topic, followed by descriptive paragraphs with headings keyed to section numbers in the code. There are color-coordinated figures, graphs and tables to illustrate each key idea, and the content of the figures clearly shows the appropriate engineering concept. There are 60 pages of example calculations to illustrate how all the numbers fit together. The included CD has a protected-PDF version of the book itself, plus PDF versions of several (free) FEMA documents. The book covers a lot of territory, introducing not just the IBC provisions themselves but also key parts from referenced standards, so it doesn't go in depth on anything (note "Handbook" in the title). In spite of the fresh content specific for structural design, this book won't reveal much to experienced designers. It is useful to explain our work to others. By the way, the book is hardback, not paperback.
